Each of the eight verses of this hymn ends on the same line: may the daughter of Kalinda always wash away the stain of our minds. The plea is not for me but for us. The other three lines describe the river, and they are packed with internal rhyme and alliteration.
The Yamuna here is the river of Vrindavan. In her dark water the dark lustre of Murari’s body shines, the rasa dance goes on in the groves along her banks, and the fragrant dyes washed from the limbs of Radha and Krishna at their water games mingle with her stream. Another hymn of the same name, the Namami Yamunam Aham of Vallabhacharya, is a different work.

She carries in her water, like an ornament, the dark lustre of the body of Murari. She has made even heaven worth no more than a blade of grass, and she takes away the sorrow of the three worlds. The rows of groves on her banks, pleasing to the mind, shake off every evil intoxication. May the daughter of Kalinda always wash away the stain of our minds.
With her full flood of water that carries away impurity she shines like nectar itself. Night and day she is greatly skilled at spreading a cool breeze over her surface. The dye from the limbs of Nanda’s son has coloured her, and she is kind to all. May Kalinda’s daughter always wash away the stain of our minds.
The touch of her shining waves shakes away the sins of all living beings. Devotees in whom a fresh and foremost sweetness of devotion has been born long only for her water, like chataka birds. Swans that live along her banks surround her like servants, and she gives what is asked of her (the last word of this line differs between editions, and we give the usual sense). May Kalinda’s daughter always wash away the stain of our minds.
The breeze that dries the sweat of the rasa dance blows along her steady banks. The loveliness of her water has gone beyond the reach of speech. By the company of her current she makes holy the land she passes, and at the end she gives herself to the ocean, the lord of rivers. May Kalinda’s daughter always wash away the stain of our minds.
Stretches of sand lie between her waves, and her water is dark for ever. The lovely clusters of the autumn moon’s rays adorn her. With her most beautiful water she is expert in serving the worship of Shiva (some words of this verse differ between editions). May Kalinda’s daughter always wash away the stain of our minds.
She herself wears the fragrant dye from the limbs of lovely Radhika, who plays in her water. She has received a share of her lord’s touch, a share others can hardly win. The third line is usually understood to say that she is greatly skilled at cutting her way through the seven seas that stand full of the water she herself gave them. May Kalinda’s daughter always wash away the stain of our minds.
She is graced by rows of bees that crave the fragrant dye of Achyuta’s body, washed loose into her water. She wears as a garland the champaka flowers that slipped from the hair of restless Radhika. Even Narada, the servant of her lord, comes down again and again to bathe in her. May Kalinda’s daughter always wash away the stain of our minds.
She is lovely for ever with the groves that hold the play of Nanda’s son. She is bright with the pollen of jasmine and kadamba that bloom along her banks. She carries the people who bathe in her water to the far shore of the ocean of worldly life. May Kalinda’s daughter always wash away the stain of our minds.
About this hymn
We take the text from stotranidhi.com, where it appears as the first Yamunashtakam. The colophon of our source names Shankaracharya as the author. Many hymns circulate under his name, so this is best taken as what tradition holds.
Two well known hymns bear the name Yamunashtakam. The one on this page is the hymn ascribed to Shankaracharya that begins Murarikayakalima. The other, beginning Namami Yamunam Aham, is by Vallabhacharya and is more used in the Pushtimarga tradition. That work is not what we give here.
Eight verses in the panchachamara metre, sixteen syllables to a line. The fourth line is the same in every verse, the refrain dhunotu no manomalam kalindanandini sada. We give its meaning in full under the first verse and in short after that. Our source has no phalashruti verse, and the hymn closes with the eighth.
The verses are thick with internal rhyme and sound play, and a single compound may hold several images at once. We therefore keep the picture of each line and give its sense, rather than rendering word by word. Some words in the second, third, fifth and sixth verses differ between editions and their sense is not settled. In those places we give only the usual understanding and say so in the meaning itself.
Yamuna is called Kalindanandini, the daughter of Kalinda, because she rises on that mountain. In the Puranas she is the daughter of the sun and the sister of Yama, and her water is dark. This hymn matches that darkness with the colour of Krishna’s body and sees the river as part of the play of Vrindavan.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
At a ferry jetty people stand together waiting for the boat. Nobody crosses alone there, everyone boards together and steps off together. The refrain of this hymn asks in the plural too, that the stain of our minds be washed away. The thought in it is that one person’s cleansing is not separate from another’s.
When the boat will come is not in the hands of those waiting on the bank. Spending that waiting time without irritation is itself a practice. A hymn that has us say the same line eight times teaches the same kind of patience.
