The Kashi Vishwanathashtakam is a hymn in which the singer urges his own mind to worship Vishwanatha, lord of Varanasi. All eight verses, in the vasantatilaka metre, close with the refrain vārāṇasīpurapatiṃ bhaja viśvanātham. It is widely sung in the Kashi temple and in homes.
The verses move through Shiva’s form and ornaments, his nature both with and beyond qualities, and finally how the devotee should prepare his own mind. Below we give the text and the meaning of each verse.

His mass of matted locks made lovely by the waves of the Ganga, his left side ever adorned by Gauri, dear to Narayana, the one who crushed the pride of bodiless Kama: worship, O mind, Vishwanatha, lord of the city of Varanasi.
Beyond the reach of words, of many qualities in form, his footstool served by Brahma, Vishnu and the gods, his consort in the left half of his fine body: worship Vishwanatha, lord of Varanasi.
Lord of beings, his limbs adorned with serpent ornaments, clad in a tiger skin, with matted locks and three eyes, his hands bearing the noose, the goad, the gestures of fearlessness and of boon-giving, and the trident: worship Vishwanatha, lord of Varanasi.
Resplendent with a crown lit by the moon, he who withered Kama of the five arrows with the fire of his forehead eye, who made the king of serpents his shining ear ornament: worship Vishwanatha, lord of Varanasi.
A lion to the maddened elephants of sin, Garuda to the serpents that are the mightiest demons, a forest fire to the jungles of death, grief and old age: worship Vishwanatha, lord of Varanasi.
Made of light, with qualities and beyond them, without a second, the root of bliss, unconquered, immeasurable; wearing serpents (or, whose very self is the serpent), with parts and without parts, the Self of all: worship Vishwanatha, lord of Varanasi.
Giving up craving, abandoning the slander of others, firmly checking the taste for sin, setting the mind in deep absorption, and holding there the supreme lord who dwells in the lotus of the heart: worship Vishwanatha, lord of Varanasi.
Free of attachment and other faults, loving towards his own, the abode of dispassion and peace, companion of Girija; graceful in sweetness and courage, lovely even with the poison at his throat: worship Vishwanatha, lord of Varanasi.
The one who recites this ashtaka, set forth in praise of Shiva, lord of the city of Varanasi, gains learning, prosperity, abundant happiness and endless fame, and when the body falls away he attains liberation.
About this hymn
The colophon of our source names no author. Printed collections often ascribe the hymn to Vyasa and sometimes to Shankaracharya. Who composed it is not known for certain.
This is an ashtaka in the vasantatilaka metre, fourteen syllables to a quarter, with a phalashruti after the eight verses. The verb bhaja in the refrain is an imperative, so the whole hymn reads as the devotee speaking to his own mind. We translate the refrain in full in verse 1 and briefly after that.
Verse 5 has three images: a lion to the elephant of sin, Garuda to the serpent that is the demon, a forest fire to the jungle of death, old age and grief. The word nāgātmakaṃ in verse 6 is read both as wearing serpents and as having the serpent for his very self, and we give the gist. Verse 7 is less a praise than an instruction to the reader’s own mind.
On the text: in verse 2 our source gives pādapīṭham and notes in brackets another reading, pādapadmam. We print pādapīṭham.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
Verse 7 asks us to give up speaking ill of others before we sit to worship. We have all seen how, when a few people stand talking by a tea stall, the talk soon turns to someone who is not there. Keeping quiet at that moment is a small discipline in itself. The verse suggests that a mind lightened in this way has more room for the remembrance of God.
