Manisha means firm conviction. The work opens with a question an outcaste asked Shankara at Kashi, when Shankara told him to step out of the way. The five verses Shankara spoke in answer all end in one conviction: whoever has known the one Self present in all, whatever his birth, is my guru.
On this page we give Kannada and English meanings for the framing verses, the outcaste’s words, Shankara’s five verses and the closing verse. The meanings follow the understanding of the Advaita tradition.

Once, as the teacher of truth, Shankara, was going to Kashi, the holy place that grants liberation, he met on the road Shankara, that is Shiva, with Gauri, in the guise of an outcaste. Seeing him, he said, “Go, go,” asking him to move aside. Then that Shankara, the outcaste, spoke in reply to Shankara.
The outcaste said: O best of the twice-born, tell me, when you say “Go, go”, what do you want to move away? This body made of food from your body made of food, or consciousness from consciousness? The inner Self is an ocean of natural bliss and awareness, without a ripple. In it, what a great delusion is this distinction: this one is a brahmin, that one an eater of dogs! Is there any difference between the sun reflected in the waters of the Ganga and the sun in a puddle in the outcastes’ street? Is there any difference between the space inside a golden pot and the space inside a clay pot?
Shankara said: The awareness that shines clearly through waking, dream and deep sleep, that runs through every body from Brahma down to the ant as the witness of the world, that alone am I, and not any object that is seen. Whoever has this firm understanding, be he an outcaste or be he twice-born, he is my guru. This is my conviction.
I am Brahman alone, and this whole world is but the spreading out of pure consciousness. All of it is imagined by me through ignorance made of the three gunas. Whoever’s mind is firmly fixed in this way on the supreme, the eternal, the stainless, the most blissful, be he outcaste or twice-born, he is my guru. This is my conviction.
Having settled, through the guru’s word, that this whole universe is ever perishable, and reflecting without break on the eternal Brahman with a mind calm and free of pretence, he burns his past and future sins in the fire of awareness, and hands his body over to prarabdha, the karma already in motion. This is my conviction.
That awareness which beasts, humans and gods all clearly grasp within as “I”, by whose light the mind, senses, body and objects, insentient in themselves, shine forth, is hidden by the very things it lights up, like the sun’s disc covered by clouds. The yogi who ever contemplates it, his mind at peace, is indeed the guru. This is my conviction.
By a mere drop of a drop from its ocean of bliss, Indra and the other gods are content. Having found it in a mind wholly stilled, the sage is fulfilled. Whoever’s intellect has melted into that ocean of eternal bliss is not merely a knower of Brahman but Brahman itself. Whoever he may be, his feet are worshipped even by the king of the gods. This, surely, is my conviction.
O Shambhu, O three-eyed one, seen as a body I am your servant. Seen as an individual soul I am a part of you. O Self of all, seen as the Self, I am you alone. Through all the scriptures my mind has settled on this.
About this hymn
Tradition, and the work’s own colophon, give it to Adi Shankaracharya. The story says that at Kashi, on his way to the Ganga, Shankara met an outcaste with his dogs, who was Shiva himself with Gauri. Hearing the outcaste’s question, Shankara is believed to have bowed to him and spoken these five verses.
The work is built as follows: a frame of two anushtubh verses, the outcaste’s words in arya and shardulavikridita, then five verses in shardulavikridita, most of them ending “he is my guru: this is my conviction”. The closing shalini verse is traditionally read as Shankara’s words when the outcaste revealed himself as Shiva. The same thought is also attributed to Hanuman, speaking to Rama.
The work takes up the distinction of caste directly, but its point is a single one: the Self in all is one, and it is that knowledge, not birth, that makes someone a guru.
On the text: in the frame we read shankarah so’pi rather than shankarasyo’pi, in the outcaste’s verse gangambuni rather than gangambudhi, and in verse 3 bhutam bhavi (past and future sins) rather than bhutam bhati. The outcaste’s address dvijavara (‘best of the twice-born’) also appears as yativara (‘best of ascetics’). The frame’s first word, satyacaryasya, is a little odd and some editions open differently, so there we give the gist.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
The morning sun through a kitchen window shines just the same in the water of a steel tumbler and in a clay pot. The vessels differ, the light is one. The outcaste’s question asks exactly this.
The habit of measuring people by their clothes, their post or their birth grows quickly in us. As Shankara stopped and bowed, we too can pause a moment and try to see the same light in the person before us.
