The Nrisimha Nakha Stuti is a hymn of just two verses. It asks for the protection of the claws of Narasimha, which tore apart Hiranyakashipu. In the Madhva tradition it is recited before and after the Hari Vayu Stuti.
The first verse asks for the protection of the claws. The second declares that nothing is equal to the consort of Lakshmi, and nothing whatever is higher. In a few words it states the first principle of Madhva teaching, that Hari is supreme.

May the fine, outstretched claws of the glorious lion-faced Lord protect us. Each of them is keener than a thunderbolt at splitting the mountain-high temples of the mighty, rutting herds of elephants that are the asuras, the enemies of Indra. The most fortunate meditate on them with minds calm and wide, the darkness driven far off since the enemy was torn apart.
O consort of Lakshmi, though I look all around, I see nothing equal to you, the Lord, let alone anything higher, which lies far beyond all question. For when your eighth rasa, raudra or wrath, surges up, sparks of fire leap from the curved corner of your eye like fireflies, and those sparks reduce whole hosts of Brahmas, Shivas and Indras to ash.
About this hymn
Tradition holds that Sri Madhvacharya himself composed these two verses. Many say that when his disciple Trivikrama Panditacharya composed the Vayu Stuti in his praise, Madhva added this so that praise of Hari would come first.
In Madhva homes and mathas it is customary to say it before and after the Hari Vayu Stuti. The Hari Vayu Stuti has its own page on our site, where we give the meaning of all its forty one verses.
Madhva commentators read the second verse as a declaration of the supremacy of Hari. Brahma, Shiva and Indra come and go across many ages of the world, and none of them can stand before a single spark of Hari’s wrath. In the Natyashastra list raudra is not the eighth rasa, but the tradition reads the eighth rasa here as raudra.
The second verse is in the shardulavikridita metre. In the first verse the first two lines are in shardulavikridita and the last two in sragdhara.

For life today
A claw or nail is the smallest, least noticed part of the body, and this hymn asks for protection from just there. In times of great trouble, on the night before an exam or in a hospital waiting room, what holds us up is often something small, a word or the touch of a hand. This hymn of only two verses works in the same way.
