The Panduranga Ashtakam is a hymn to Vitthala, who stands on a brick with his hands on his hips at Pandharpur on the banks of the Bhima (Chandrabhaga). Every verse ends parabrahmaliṅgaṃ bhaje pāṇḍuraṅgam: I worship Panduranga, the visible sign of the supreme Brahman. Here liṅga does not mean the Shiva linga: it is the sign that points to Parabrahman, its embodiment.
The hymn begins with the Lord who came to give a boon to Pundalika and stayed standing there, describes his form, and at the end calls him liberation itself and the fourth state beyond waking, dream and sleep. The ninth verse is the phalashruti. We give the text in three scripts, with the meaning of each verse in Kannada and English.

On the bank of the Bhimarathi, the great seat of yoga, he came with the foremost sages to give a boon to Pundarika (Pundalika) and stands there still, the root of all bliss. I worship Panduranga, the liṅga of the supreme Brahman, that is, its visible sign and embodiment.
Clad in a garment bright as lightning, with the sheen of a dark rain cloud, the beautiful abode of Lakshmi, the very light of consciousness, the best of beings, standing with both feet set together on a brick: I worship Panduranga, the sign of the supreme Brahman.
He rests both hands on his hips to show that for his own devotees the ocean of worldly life is only this deep, waist-deep. He bears the lotus at his navel as a dwelling for Brahma the creator. I worship that Panduranga.
Adorned at the throat with the shining Kaustubha gem, his armlets graced by Lakshmi, the abode of Shri; auspicious, peaceful, worthy of praise, the best, the protector of the worlds: I worship Panduranga.
With a face like the disc of the autumn moon and a lovely smile, his cheeks touched by gleaming earrings, lips red as the hibiscus and the bimba fruit, eyes like lotuses: I worship Panduranga.
His crown lights up every direction to its farthest edge, and the gods worship him with priceless heavenly gems. He stands in the graceful pose bent in three places, with a garland of peacock feathers for his crest: I worship Panduranga.
All-pervading, wandering as he pours out the music of the flute, one whose end no one can reach; who of his own will, in play, took on the dress of a cowherd, who gives joy to the herds of cows, with a lovely smile: I worship Panduranga.
The unborn, the one who gives life to Rukmini’s very breath, the supreme abode, liberation itself, the One, the Fourth (turīya, the state beyond waking, dream and sleep); gracious, the remover of the distress of those who take refuge in him, the god of gods: I worship that Panduranga.
Those who recite this merit-giving hymn to Panduranga every day with a single mind and with devotion cross the ocean of worldly existence and, at the time of death, reach the eternal abode of Hari.
About this hymn
The colophon names Shankaracharya as the author, and tradition says the same. As with many hymns that carry his name, the date and authorship cannot be settled with certainty.
Pandharpur lies on the Bhima, which is called the Chandrabhaga there because it bends like a crescent moon. The story goes that while Pundalika was busy serving his aged parents, Krishna himself came to his door. Unwilling to leave his service half done, Pundalika tossed a brick (iṣṭakā) towards the Lord for him to stand on and asked him to wait. Tradition says the Lord stood on it with his hands on his hips and waited, and stands so to this day. Many explain the name Vitthala as the one who stands on a brick (viṭ).
It is an ashtaka of eight verses in the bhujangaprayata metre, with a ninth verse of phalashruti. The hymn blends the Vitthala of Pandharpur with features of the Krishna of Vrindavana (the pose bent in three places, the flute, the cowherd’s dress), though the image at Pandharpur stands straight. The third verse gives a lovely meaning to the hands on the hips: the Lord is showing his devotees that the ocean of worldly life is only waist-deep.
Vitthala is the beloved deity of the Varkari tradition of Maharashtra and of the Haridasas of Karnataka: it is he whom Purandaradasa sang under the signature Purandara Vitthala. On the text: in the phalashruti our source gives te ‘pi in brackets as a variant, and we print the verse without it.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
In Pundalika’s story the Lord himself waits at the door, because the son is serving food to his aged parents. The small daily care given at an elderly parent’s bedside at home goes unseen by anyone. Yet this story says that even God is willing to wait for such service.
Days come to all of us when troubles seem to have no bottom. Devotees read the figure of Vitthala, standing with his hands on his hips, as a quiet reassurance: the water is only this deep, and your feet can touch the ground.
