ಶಮೀ ಶಮಯತೇ ಪಾಪಂ: ವಿಜಯದಶಮಿಯ ಶಮೀ ಪೂಜಾ ಶ್ಲೋಕ

ವಿಜಯದಶಮಿಯಂದು ಶಮೀ ವೃಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸುವಾಗ ಹೇಳುವ ಶಮೀ ಶಮಯತೇ ಪಾಪಂ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಅರ್ಥ: ಕನ್ನಡ, ದೇವನಾಗರಿ ಮತ್ತು IAST ಪಾಠ, ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ ಮತ್ತು ವಿವರಣೆ.

ವಿಜಯದಶಮಿಯಂದು ಶಮೀ ವೃಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿ ಅದರ ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬಂಗಾರದ ಎಲೆಗಳೆಂದು ಹಂಚುವ ರೂಢಿ ಇದೆ. ಆಗ ಹೇಳುವ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇದು.

ಪಾಂಡವರು ವನವಾಸದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಆಯುಧಗಳನ್ನು ಶಮೀ ವೃಕ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರೆಂಬ ಮಹಾಭಾರತದ ಕಥೆಯೂ ಈ ಪೂಜೆಯ ಹಿಂದಿದೆ.

ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಶಮೀ ಶಮಯತೇ ಪಾಪಂ ಶಮೀ ಶತ್ರುವಿನಾಶಿನೀ ।
ಅರ್ಜುನಸ್ಯ ಧನುರ್ಧಾರೀ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶಿನೀ ॥

शमी शमयते पापं शमी शत्रुविनाशिनी ।
अर्जुनस्य धनुर्धारी रामस्य प्रियदर्शिनी ॥

ಶ್ಲೋಕ (IAST)

śamī śamayate pāpaṃ śamī śatruvināśinī |
arjunasya dhanurdhārī rāmasya priyadarśinī ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಶಮೀ ಶಮಯತೇ ಪಾಪಮ್ (शमी शमयते पापम्, śamī śamayate pāpam) = ಶಮೀ ವೃಕ್ಷ ಪಾಪವನ್ನು ಶಮನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ (the Shami tree pacifies sin)
ಶಮೀ ಶತ್ರುವಿನಾಶಿನೀ (शमी शत्रुविनाशिनी, śamī śatruvināśinī) = ಶತ್ರುಗಳನ್ನು ನಾಶಮಾಡುವ ಶಮೀ (the Shami that destroys enemies)
ಅರ್ಜುನಸ್ಯ ಧನುರ್ಧಾರೀ (अर्जुनस्य धनुर्धारी, arjunasya dhanurdhārī) = ಅರ್ಜುನನ ಬಿಲ್ಲನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತವಳು (the one who bore Arjuna’s bow)
ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶಿನೀ (रामस्य प्रियदर्शिनी, rāmasya priyadarśinī) = ರಾಮನಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದ ದರ್ಶನ ಕೊಡುವವಳು (dear to the sight of Rama)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಪಾಪವನ್ನು ಶಮನ ಮಾಡುವ, ಶತ್ರುಗಳನ್ನು ನಾಶಮಾಡುವ, ಅರ್ಜುನನ ಬಿಲ್ಲನ್ನು ಬಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ, ರಾಮನಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದ ಈ ಶಮೀ ವೃಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Salutations to this Shami tree, which pacifies sin, destroys enemies, once held Arjuna’s hidden bow, and is dear to Rama.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse

ಮಹಾಭಾರತದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಪಾಂಡವರು ಅಜ್ಞಾತವಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಮುನ್ನ ತಮ್ಮ ಆಯುಧಗಳನ್ನು ಶಮೀ ವೃಕ್ಷದ ಪೊಟರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು, ಆ ಅವಧಿ ಮುಗಿದ ದಿನವನ್ನೇ ವಿಜಯದಶಮಿಯೆಂದು ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಕಥೆ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತ.

According to the Mahabharata, the Pandavas hid their weapons in the hollow of a Shami tree before going into their year of hiding, and a popular account holds that the day that period ended is celebrated as Vijayadashami.

ಕೊನೆಯ ಸಾಲಿನ ಪಾಠ ಆಕರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಕೆಲವು ಮುದ್ರಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶಿನೀ ಎಂದಿದ್ದರೆ ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವು ಕಡೆ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದಿನೀ ಎಂದೂ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಬಳಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶಿನೀ ಪಾಠವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

The reading of the last line differs a little across sources: some printed versions have priyadarshini while others have priyavadini. We have given here the more widely used reading, priyadarshini.

Worshipping this tree that once guarded hidden weapons reminds us of the patience to hold our strength through hard days and bring it out only when the right time comes.
