The Shiva Tandava Stotra describes Shiva’s fierce dance. The Ganga pouring from his matted locks, the garland of snakes at his throat, the fire of his forehead eye and the young moon on his head all pass before us at the speed of the dance. Tradition holds that Ravana sang it.
What marks this hymn is its sound. The pañcacāmara metre, in which short and long syllables alternate, falls on the ear like the beat of a drum. In the closing verses the poet steps out of the dance and speaks of his wish to worship Shiva quietly on the bank of the Ganga.

His neck made holy by the stream of Ganga flowing from the forest of his matted locks, a great garland of snakes hanging long about it, Shiva danced the fierce tandava while his damaru drum rang out ḍamaḍ ḍamaḍ. May that Shiva spread good fortune over us.
His head gleams with the restless creeper like waves of the heavenly river, whirling wildly in the cauldron of his matted locks. On his brow a fire blazes up, dhagad dhagad, and a young crescent moon crowns him. May my love be fixed on him every moment.
He is lovely as the companion in play of the Mountain King’s daughter. His mind delights in the whole array of beings out to the shining ends of the directions. The stream of his kind glances holds back calamities that nothing else could stop. May my mind find its joy in that indescribable Reality, clad only in the directions.
The light from the jewels in the tawny hoods of the snakes in his locks smears the faces of the maidens of the directions like liquid saffron. He is massive in the gleaming hide of a rut blinded elephant worn as an upper cloth. May my mind hold a wondrous joy in him, the lord of all beings.
The footstool under his feet is grey with pollen falling from the flowers on the crowns of Indra, the thousand eyed, and all the other gods as they bow. His matted hair is tied up with a garland of the king of snakes, and he wears the moon, friend of the chakora bird, on his head. May he bring us prosperity for long.
The sparks of the fire blazing on the courtyard of his forehead swallowed up Manmatha of the five arrows. Indra, lord of the gods, bows before him, and a streak of the nectar rayed moon shines on his crest. May that matted head of the great skull bearer be for our prosperity.
In the fire that blazes dhagad dhagad on his fearsome forehead he offered up mighty Manmatha as an oblation. He is the one artist skilled in drawing ornamental leaf patterns on the bosom of the Mountain King’s daughter. May my love be for him, the three eyed one.
His throat is dark as the thick gloom of a new moon midnight shut in by masses of fresh rain clouds. He bears the heavenly river, wears the elephant’s hide, is lovely with the moon and carries the burden of the world. May he spread prosperity.
I worship him whose neck is beautiful with a throat glowing dark like a spread of blossoming blue lotuses. He cut down Manmatha, the three demon cities of Tripura, the bondage of worldly existence, Daksha’s sacrifice, the elephant demon Gajasura and the demon Andhaka. He even cut down Yama, the god of death, for the sake of Markandeya.
I worship Shiva, the bee who savours the sweetness of the flowing nectar of that abundant cluster of kadamba blossoms, the graces of Sarvamangala, Parvati. He is the ender of Manmatha, of Tripura, of worldly existence, of Daksha’s sacrifice, of Gajasura and of Andhaka, and the ender even of Yama, the ender of all.
As the breath of the wildly whirling snakes rushes out, the fire on his fearsome forehead flares up in turn. To the rhythm of the deep, auspicious sound of the mridanga beating dhimid dhimid, he sets the fierce tandava in motion. Victory to that Shiva.
A bed of stone and a splendid couch, a snake and a string of pearls, a precious gem and a clod of earth, friend and foe, a blade of grass and a lotus eyed beauty, a common subject and the emperor of the earth: when shall I look on all of these alike and worship Sadashiva?
Dwelling in a hollow among the thickets on the bank of the Ganga, freed from evil thoughts, always holding my joined palms above my head, my restless eyes turned on him, my mind fixed on the one with the beautiful brow, chanting the mantra Shiva: when shall I be happy? The phrase lalāmaphālalagnakaḥ is also read as wearing the sacred mark on my forehead.
Whoever reads, remembers and recites every day this supreme hymn, as it has been told here, is always made pure. He soon gains true devotion to Hara, the guru, and goes to no other end. For embodied beings, thinking on Shankara is what dispels delusion.
Whoever, at the close of worship in the pradosha hour, reads this song of the ten headed one, devoted to the worship of Shambhu, to him Shambhu gives lasting prosperity, with chariots, fine elephants and horses, ever smiling on him.
About this hymn
Tradition holds that Ravana of Lanka composed this hymn, and verse 15 itself calls it daśavaktragīta, the song of the ten headed one. A popular story tells that when Ravana tried to lift Mount Kailasa, Shiva pressed it down with his toe, and Ravana sang Shiva’s praise. The actual date and author of the hymn are not known for certain.
Verses 1 to 14 are in the pañcacāmara metre: sixteen syllables to a line, short and long alternating throughout. This is what gives the hymn its drum beat rhythm. The last verse, 15, is in vasantatilaka. Verses 14 and 15 form the phalashruti.
The poet builds pictures out of sound. The ḍamaḍ ḍamaḍ of verse 1 is the sound of the small drum in Shiva’s hand. The dhagad dhagad of verses 2 and 7 is the roar of the fire leaping from his forehead eye. The dhimid dhimid of verse 11 is the beat of the mridanga. In the meanings we have not tried to translate these, only to say what sound they stand for.
On the text: we write the long compounds joined, as they stand in Sanskrit, where many printings split them to make reading easier. Some versions also carry one or two extra verses and differ in a few words. We give the more widely current text of fifteen verses.

For life today
Verse 12 longs for the day when a bed of stone and a soft couch, a friend and a foe, a common subject and an emperor will all look alike. In a hospital ward this evenness comes about of its own accord. Among people lying in the same plain gowns, it is hard to say who is great and who is small.
But the poet asks for it in everyday life, not only when trouble comes. If we make it a daily habit to speak to whoever stands before us with the same respect, whatever their standing, some part of that verse becomes our own.
