The Yati Panchakam, also called the Kaupina Panchakam, is a short hymn of five verses. It describes the life of a renunciant established in knowledge of the Self. Every verse ends with the line “those who wear only a loincloth are the truly fortunate”.
Tradition ascribes it to Shri Shankaracharya. We give the text in three scripts and explain each verse and the closing phalashruti.

They ever delight in the sentences of the Upanishads, are content with food received as alms alone, and rejoice in a mind free of sorrow. Such people, wearing only a loincloth, are truly the fortunate ones.
They take the foot of a tree as their only shelter, use their two hands as the bowl to eat from, and spurn wealth as if it were a patched quilt. These, in their loincloth, are the fortunate ones.
They wipe away the sense of being the body and the rest, see the Self in the Self, and think of no end, no middle and no outside. These, in their loincloth, are the fortunate ones.
They are fully content in the bliss of their own Self, with the outward reach of every sense stilled, and they delight in Brahman day and night. These, in their loincloth, are the fortunate ones.
They utter the purifying syllable of Brahman, Om, meditate in the heart on Pashupati, Shiva, the lord of all beings, and wander in every direction living on alms. These, in their loincloth, are the fortunate ones.
Whoever reflects on these five gems on the loincloth gains dispassion and knowledge of dharma. Of this there is no doubt.
About this hymn
The colophon of the stotranidhi.com text we follow names it a work of Shri Shankara Bhagavatpada. The Advaita tradition accepts it as such, though firm evidence for the authorship is thin.
All five verses are in the Upajati metre and close with the same refrain. The final Anushtubh verse is the phalashruti. It is unnumbered in the source, and we number it six.
We print the text of our source. Other printings read vṛttimantaḥ for dṛṣṭimantaḥ in the fourth verse. Some also give the second line of the fifth verse as brahmāham asmīti vibhāvayantaḥ (“contemplating ‘I am Brahman'”), and the third line with bhikṣāśano.
The Nirvana Shatkam, from the same tradition, sings of the same experience of the Self beyond the body. The two can be read together.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
In a railway waiting room some people carry very little, one small bag and nothing more. When the train comes, they simply rise and go.
Those of us who run households will always have luggage. But the lightness this hymn praises belongs to the mind. If we now and then look at what we truly need to carry, a little of that lightness may come our way too.
