ತಮುವಾಚ ಹೃಷೀಕೇಶಃ ಪ್ರಹಸನ್ನಿವ ಭಾರತ।
ಸೇನಯೋರುಭಯೋರ್ಮಧ್ಯೇ ವಿಷೀದಂತಮಿದಂ ವಚಃ ॥ 10 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
तमुवाच हृषीकेशः प्रहसन्निव भारत।
सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये विषीदन्तमिदं वचः ॥ 10 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (English IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ತಮ್ (तम्, tam) = ಅವನಿಗೆ (to him)
- ಉವಾಚ (उवाच, uvāca) = ಹೇಳಿದನು (said)
- ಹೃಷೀಕೇಶಃ (हृषीकेशः, hṛṣīkeśaḥ) = ಹೃಷೀಕೇಶ (Hrishikesha)
- ಪ್ರಹಸನ್ ಇವ (प्रहसन् इव, prahasan iva) = ನಗುತ್ತಿರುವಂತೆ (as if smiling)
- ಭಾರತ (भारत, bhārata) = ಓ ಭರತವಂಶಜನೇ (O descendant of Bharata)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಓ ಭರತವಂಶಜನೇ, ಎರಡೂ ಸೈನ್ಯಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಕುಸಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಹೃಷೀಕೇಶನು ನಗುತ್ತಿರುವಂತೆ ಈ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿದನು.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
O descendant of Bharata, to him who was sinking in sorrow between the two armies, Hrishikesha spoke this word, as if smiling.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 2.10ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 2.10
ಪ್ರಹಸನ್ ಇವ ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಪದಗಳು ಗೀತೆಯ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಚರ್ಚಿತ ಪದಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರುತ್ತವೆ. ಇವ ಎಂದರೆ ‘ಹಾಗೆ ಕಾಣುವಂತೆ’. ಕೃಷ್ಣ ನಕ್ಕ ಎನ್ನುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ನಗುತ್ತಿರುವಂತೆ ಇದ್ದ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ ಶ್ಲೋಕ.
The two words prahasann iva are among the most discussed in the Gita. Iva means as if. The verse does not say Krishna laughed; it says he was as if smiling.
ಆ ನಗುವಿನ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿ ಓದುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಶಿಷ್ಯನ ಗೊಂದಲವನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಗುರುವಿನ ಮೃದು ಹಾಸ್ಯ ಎಂದು ಕೆಲವರು, ‘ಅಳಬೇಡ, ಇದೇನೂ ದೊಡ್ಡದಲ್ಲ’ ಎಂದು ಧೈರ್ಯ ತುಂಬುವ ಭಾವ ಎಂದು ಕೆಲವರು ಓದುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ದುಃಖದಲ್ಲಿರುವವರ ಎದುರು ನಗುವುದು ಸುಲಭದ ಕೆಲಸವಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನೂ ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕು. ಇವ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಆ ನಗುವನ್ನು ಅರ್ಧ ಮರೆಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.
Commentators read that smile in different ways. Some hear the gentle humour of a teacher who sees his pupil’s confusion; others hear reassurance: do not weep, this is not so large a thing. Besides, smiling before someone in grief is not an easy thing to do. The word iva half conceals that smile.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ರೋಗಿಯ ಮುಖದ ಮೇಲಿನ ಆತಂಕಕ್ಕೆ ವೈದ್ಯರ ಮುಖ ಕೊಡುವ ಉತ್ತರ ಮಾತಿಗಿಂತ ಬೇಗ ತಲುಪುತ್ತದೆ. ಗಂಭೀರ ಮುಖ ಭಯವನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸಬಹುದು, ಅತಿಯಾದ ನಗು ನಂಬಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಕುಗ್ಗಿಸಬಹುದು.
The answer a doctor’s face gives to the worry on a patient’s face arrives faster than any words. A grave face can raise the fear; too broad a smile can weaken trust.
ಕೃಷ್ಣನದು ಅವೆರಡರ ನಡುವಿನ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ನಗು. ‘ನಿನ್ನ ದುಃಖ ನಿಜ, ಆದರೆ ಇದರಿಂದ ಹೊರಬರುವ ದಾರಿ ಇದೆ’ ಎಂದು ಆ ಒಂದು ಭಾವ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಾತು ಶುರುವಾಗುವ ಮೊದಲೇ ಅರ್ಧ ಸಮಾಧಾನ ಆಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
Krishna’s is a small smile between the two. That one expression says: your grief is real, and there is a way out of it. Half the reassurance is done before the talking begins.
