Context and commentary on verse 2.11
Tradition holds that the teaching of the Gita truly begins with this verse. Shankaracharya opens it this way: Bhishma and Drona are not fit objects of grief, because their conduct is good and because, in their true nature, they are eternal. His emphasis is that delusion and learning cannot stand together.
Ramanujacharya looks at it from another side. Words like the ancestors fall come from taking the body to be the self. For one who knows body and self to be different, there is no cause for grief here at all. Madhvacharya reads prajnavada plainly as words that have risen from one’s own mind.
It would be wrong to read this verse as a denial of grief. Arjuna’s sorrow is real. But along with that sorrow he is also speaking the language of the scriptures. It is this contradiction that Krishna points out first.

For life today
A grieving mind brings its reasoning along with it. We say I know, everyone has to go one day, and the tears come while we are saying it. Both are true at once.
In a house of mourning, philosophy spoken too early does not help. Krishna speaks this way only after Arjuna has asked to be taught. Philosophy offered to those who have not asked becomes a lecture, not a support.
