Context and commentary on verse 2.17
For the image of pervading, Shankaracharya gives the analogy of space. As space fills the pots, so the reality called sat, Brahman, pervades this world. Avyaya means what neither grows nor wanes.
Ramanujacharya’s tradition reads the same line at the level of the body: the self pervades the whole body, and no weapon touches it. The difference between the two readings is real. In one, what pervades is Brahman; in the other, the individual self.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
In a house, one person’s presence spreads through every room. Even after they are gone it stays in the kitchen jars and in the pages of books.
That experience is a small window into the word pervading. Presence is not measured in space, and no one can cut it.
