The unreal has no being; the real never ceases to be. The seers of truth have seen the conclusion about both.
Context and commentary on verse 2.16
This is one of the densest verses in the Gita. The two words sat and asat are opened in three ways by three acharyas.
For Shankaracharya, asat means changing states such as cold and heat. As the shape of a pot has no being apart from the clay, a modification has no being of its own apart from its cause. Whatever changes is asat; what remains unchanged is sat. Ramanujacharya’s reading is direct: asat is the body, sat is the self. The nature of the body is to perish and the nature of the self is to be, and that is the conclusion the seers of truth have reached.
Madhvacharya goes another way. On the authority of shruti and smriti he argues that not only the self but prakriti and time too are eternal. We record here how one verse stands as ground for three schools.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Even setting the great philosophy aside, this verse holds an everyday task: to see separately what changes and what remains.
With a fever it feels as though I have been defeated. When one number rises in a report it feels as though my whole life has changed. In that moment, separating what is passing from what will remain is itself a large relief.
