Context and commentary on verse 2.52
For the word kalila Sridhara Swami quotes a lexicon and gives the sense of gahana, a dense thicket. The thicket is the sense of oneself as the body.
On the word nirveda there is a clear divide. Shankaracharya and Ramanujacharya read it as dispassion: what has been heard and what is yet to be heard begin to appear fruitless. Madhvacharya does not accept this. He reads nirveda as nitaram labha, a full attaining, and cites the Brihadaranyaka’s use of the word in nirvidya pandityam.
His reason is worth noting: those who know feel no distaste for hearing the glory of the Lord, and he cites the Bhagavata on Shuka, who heard it again and again. Both readings are recorded here as they stand.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
The hunger to read a little more on a subject, to hear one more opinion, is good up to a point. But sometimes the searching itself becomes the way of postponing a decision.
In matters of treatment a second opinion is the patient’s right and a proper thing to seek. But by the eighth opinion what is being sought is not information but a different answer. Recognising that difference is the nirveda of this verse.
