Context and commentary on verse 3.11
Here is a circle in which giving and receiving both run. Sridhara Swami spells it out: you nourish the gods with the shares of the oblation, and they nourish you by producing food through rain.
On what ‘the highest good’ means, Shankara offers two possibilities: liberation, arrived at through the stages by which knowledge comes, or heaven. For Ramanuja it is liberation.
Ramanuja’s reading of this verse holds his whole vision. The gods are the body of the Lord and he is their self, so worshipping the gods is not the worship of someone else. He recalls the ninth chapter here: I alone am the enjoyer and the lord of all sacrifices.

The picture here is not trade but nourishment. In trade what you give must come back matched. In nourishment what you give comes back grown.
Any team runs this way. Nurses, doctors, laboratory staff, cleaners: let any one group start counting only its own share and the circle stops. When each looks to make the next person’s work easier, everyone’s work gets easier.
