Context and commentary on verse 3.10

Sridhara Swami notes that the next four verses build a wheel, and that they begin with Prajapati’s words.

Who Prajapati is divides the commentators. For Shankara and Sridhara Swami he is Brahma, the creator of creatures. Ramanuja takes up the Taittiriya line ‘lord of the universe, ruler of selves’ and holds that the word Prajapati, with no qualification attached, points to Narayana himself.

The ‘cow that yields what you wish’ also has two readings. Shankara reads it generally, as the particular fruits one wants. Ramanuja reads it directly as liberation, adding that it also grants the other wishes that serve liberation.

Sridhara Swami adds an honest note. In a passage that tells you to drop the desire for fruit, praising a sacrifice that grants fruit looks a little out of place. His answer is that what is being said here is the general point that acting beats not acting, so there is no fault in it. Madhva marks these two verses as arthavada, words of commendation.

For life today

The picture in this verse is that a system of giving and receiving was handed over along with the world itself. Nobody arrives on empty ground. Language, houses, medicine, schools are all standing there when we arrive.

We did not build that order. What we can do is keep it running and pass it on undamaged to those who come after us.
