Context and commentary on verse 3.13
Behind this verse lies an old idea of household duty, and both Sridhara Swami and Shankara hold it up.
It is the pancha-suna. The smritis say that in five places in a house small creatures are harmed whether one wishes it or not: the pestle, the grinding stone, the hearth, the water pot and the broom. There is an admission there that living itself involves a measure of harm.
The remedy is not to stop cooking. It is to give first and eat what is left. Shankara calls that remainder nectar. Ramanuja puts it more directly still: take the materials for worship, cook them, worship the Lord as he truly is, and carry the body on what remains. Madhva wrote no commentary on this verse.

For life today
This verse does not hide the fact that living cannot be done without some cost to others. The food we eat, the power we use, the clothes we wear: somewhere a price was paid for all of it.
Not forgetting that is the practice being taught. The habit of setting the first portion aside for someone else does not change the stomach. It changes the mind.
