Context and commentary on verse 3.14
Here is a chain of four links, and all four commentators quote the same smriti line: the oblation cast into the fire reaches the sun, from the sun comes rain, from rain food, and from food the creatures.
Shankara adds a fine point. Yajna here means apurva, the unseen potency left behind once the act is done. The source of that apurva is the activity of the priests and the sacrificer, and that activity is karma.
Madhva draws precise boundaries around the words: the giving up of a substance directed at a deity is yajna, and the rest of the activity is karma. He also notes that Parjanya is the deity presiding over the assembly of clouds.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

This verse counts out how many hands stand behind the food on the plate: the rain, the soil, the one who sowed, the one who carried, the ones who cooked.
No link in that chain can claim to be sufficient by itself. The feeling that what I did is the whole of it survives only as long as the other links stay out of sight.
