Know that action arises from Brahman, and Brahman from the Imperishable. Therefore the all-pervading Brahman is ever established in sacrifice.
Context and commentary on verse 3.15
This is the verse in the chapter where the meanings of the words diverge most. Three acharyas give three different senses to both brahma and akshara.
For Shankara brahma means the Veda and akshara means the Supreme Self. It is the Veda that reveals action, and that Veda came out of the Supreme like a breath. Sridhara Swami follows the same road and quotes the shruti that the Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas are the out-breath of that great Being.
Ramanuja goes in an entirely different direction. For him brahma here is the body, the transformation of prakriti, and akshara is the individual self. So the sense becomes: action arises from the body, the body stands on the individual self, and that body rests on sacrifice. He cites the fourteenth chapter, ‘the great brahman is my womb’, as his warrant.
Madhva’s reading is another again. Brahman is the Lord, and action arises from him. He quotes the Kaushitaki line that it is he who makes one do good work, and argues that inert things have no activity of their own. Akshara, for him, means the syllables themselves, the letters of the Veda, since it is through them that the supreme Brahman is made manifest.
Deciding between these readings is not this page’s work. But what survives in all three is the same: work comes from somewhere. It is not our own invention.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
No work we do begins with us. Behind the drug we write today are the trials, behind the trials is a question somebody asked, and behind the question is some patient.
Keeping that chain in mind reduces both the pride in the work and the indifference to it. Knowing that we are carrying something not our own corrects them both.
