Context and commentary on verse 3.22
Sridhara Swami marks that after the example of Janaka, Krishna now puts himself forward as the example. The next three verses unfold it.
The condition described in verse seventeen returns here in its full form. But there it ended with ‘for him there is nothing to be done’. Here a line is added: nothing for me to do either, and yet I do it. That added line is the heart of the whole chapter.
Ramanuja explains who this ‘I’ is: the Lord of all, whose every desire is already fulfilled, all-knowing, of unfailing resolve, moving at will through the three worlds in the forms of gods and men. Even such a one stands in action for the protection of the world. Madhva wrote no commentary on this verse.

Watching people who keep working after they have everything they need shows you what the real reason for work is. Once necessity is finished, only interest and responsibility are left.
The doctor who still comes to the free clinic two days a week after retiring, the teacher who goes back to the school with a pension already in hand: these are small copies of this verse.
