Context and commentary on verse 4.1
The fourth chapter opens with a lineage. Sridhara Swami notes that the karma yoga and jnana yoga taught in the previous two chapters are here being praised through their tradition. Vivasvan is the Sun, Manu his son, and Ikshvaku Manu’s son and the first king of the solar dynasty.
For Shankara, ‘this yoga’ is the very yoga of the last two chapters. It was given to the Sun at the start of creation to strengthen the kshatriyas who protect the world; with that strength they are able to protect the Brahmanical order, and through it the world. It is ‘imperishable’ because its fruit, liberation, never perishes.
Ramanuja heads off a misunderstanding at once. One should not think this yoga has been spoken now merely to stir Arjuna into battle. At the beginning of the Manvantara the Lord himself gave it to Vivasvan, for the uplift of the whole world, as the means to liberation.
Madhva states the chapter’s subject at the outset: the greatness of the one beyond the intellect, the kinds of action, and the greatness of knowledge. The point of this verse, he says, is that this dharma was practised in earlier times too.

For life today
To say a teaching has a lineage is to say it has passed through many hands. Medicine has grown the same way. A skill taught by hand, from teacher to student and from senior doctor to junior, is never fully captured in a book.
A tradition does not earn respect merely by being old. It carries weight because many people lived it and kept it. Handing on what we received, intact, is also a responsibility.
