Context and commentary on verse 4.17
Three words: karma, vikarma, akarma. ‘Gahana’ means dense, like a thick forest in which it is hard to see a path. The acharyas part ways over how to read ‘vikarma’.
For Shankara, karma is what scripture enjoins, vikarma what scripture forbids, and akarma remaining still. In ‘the way of action’, ‘action’ stands for all three, and ‘way’ means their true nature. Madhva too reads vikarma as forbidden action, which binds. He quotes a verse that without distinguishing these three there is neither the vision of the Lord nor liberation.
Ramanuja reads vikarma as ‘varied action’: the daily, the occasional and the desire-prompted rites, and work such as earning the materials needed for them. What is to be understood in these is that, setting aside the variety that comes from different fruits, all of it is done for the single goal of liberation. This, he recalls, was already said in 2.41, ‘the resolute understanding is one’. Akarma, again, is knowledge of the self.
Sridhara Swami holds the three together. Even the truth of enjoined work is not just what is commonly known. It, its omission, and forbidden work must all be understood, because they are hard to know.

For life today
The moral weight of an act does not lie only in how it looks from outside. Intention, context and consequence all enter into it. That is why the word ‘deep’.
This is also why hospitals have ethics committees. Even intelligent people with good intentions cannot, on certain questions, reach the right decision alone. As Sridhara Swami says, one must inquire together with those who know.
