Context and commentary on verse 4.22
‘Yadrccha-labha’ means gain that comes unasked and unsought. ‘Dvandva’ means pairs such as cold and heat, pleasure and pain. To ‘go beyond’ them, Shankara explains, is not to be untouched by them, but to stay undejected even when struck by them.
In Shankara’s reading this is a picture of the renunciate who goes for alms only to keep the body alive. Whether he gets food or not, he is the same. Through the understanding of 3.28, ‘the qualities move among the qualities’, he is a doer in the eyes of the world and a non-doer in his own experience.
Ramanuja reads it as a picture of the karma yogi and brings it straight to Arjuna’s situation: even-minded in victory and defeat in work such as battle. His gloss on ‘free of envy’ is subtle: one who knows that the harm coming to him is caused by his own karma bears no ill will towards others. Such a person, he says, is not bound even without the stage of devotion to knowledge.
Madhva reads this as the mark of the ‘restrained in mind and self’ of the previous verse. How does one go beyond the pairs? The verse itself answers: by being even in success and failure.

For life today
‘Content with what comes unasked’ is not an excuse for idleness. Let the effort be complete, and let there be a mind that accepts without grumbling whatever comes as its result.
Ramanuja’s gloss on envy sets us thinking. When we find someone to blame for our trouble, the mind seems to lighten, but it breeds bitterness. When we carry the responsibility ourselves, there is less room for bitterness.
