The instrument of offering is Brahman, the oblation is Brahman, and it is offered by Brahman into the fire that is Brahman. One absorbed in Brahman in action reaches Brahman alone.
Context and commentary on verse 4.24
This is among the best known verses of the Gita. It names every part of the sacrifice: the instrument of offering such as the ladle, the oblation such as ghee, the fire, the one who offers, the act of offering, and the result. All of it is Brahman. It is precisely in what ‘all is Brahman’ means that the three acharyas’ visions clearly part.
For Shankara this is the vision of the knower of Brahman. Just as one who saw silver in a shell later sees ‘what I took for silver is only shell’, so what the world takes as the instrument of offering he sees as Brahman alone. It has no existence apart from the Self. Once the sense of difference between doer, instrument, act and fruit is gone, even action done for the holding together of the world is, in the ultimate sense, non-action.
For Ramanuja everything is Brahman because everything is Brahman’s effect and Brahman is the self of all. The ladle is Brahman because it is Brahman’s effect, and the oblation too has Brahman as its being. By contemplating all action as having the Supreme Brahman as its self, the seeker’s action itself takes the form of knowledge and becomes a direct means to seeing the self.
Madhva’s reading goes in another direction. All these are called ‘Brahman’ because their existence and activity depend on Brahman, not because they are Brahman’s own nature. He quotes the Padma Purana: ‘Because all depends on you, the sages call you all, not because you are all in nature.’
Sridhara Swami sees this as another form of the dissolving of action: for one who sees Brahman running through the action and all its parts, the action dissolves, and what he gains is no other fruit but Brahman itself.

For life today
In many homes this verse is recited before meals. Then the plate, the food, the fire of digestion and the one who eats all become parts of a sacrifice. The ordinary act of eating becomes an offering.
Work can be seen this way too. When the tool, the task, the worker and the person the work is for are all seen as part of one sacredness, even the most ordinary work gains dignity. Even if that vision does not stay, a single moment of it can change a day.
