Context and commentary on verse 4.25
From here to verse 30 comes a list of twelve kinds of sacrifice. Sridhara Swami and Shankara both note that the purpose is to praise the sacrifice of knowledge above all of them. The conclusion comes in 4.33.
For Shankara the first line is about ritualists who sacrifice to Indra and the other gods. The second line is about the knowers of Brahman. Here ‘yajna’ means the Self, since yajna is among the names of the Self. Seeing the Self, which appears with the limiting adjuncts of intellect and the rest, as the unconditioned Supreme Brahman itself, is that offering.
Ramanuja reads both lines as kinds of karma yogis. Some devote themselves to the worship of the gods. Others, in the manner of ‘brahmarpanam’ in the previous verse, devote themselves to offering ghee and other materials, which have Brahman as their self, with the ladle and other instruments.
For Madhva, ‘daivam’ means the Lord himself. For some renunciates, worship of the Lord alone is their sacrifice; they have no other. The ‘yajnam’ of the second line is also the Lord, as in the Shruti ‘yajno vai vishnuh’, sacrifice is Vishnu. He also quotes a verse that Brahma worshipped Vishnu himself in a sacrifice of the mind.

The Gita does not impose a single road here. From worship of a deity to deep meditation, it opens different doors for people of different natures.
When we see a practice different from our own, before looking down on it we might remember this list. The Gita calls all of them ‘sacrifice’.
