Those who eat the nectar left over from sacrifice reach the eternal Brahman. This world is not for one who does not sacrifice, best of the Kurus; how then the other?
Context and commentary on verse 4.31
‘What is left from sacrifice’ recalls 3.13, ‘the good who eat what is left from sacrifice’. There it meant release from sin; here it goes further, to reaching the eternal Brahman.
Shankara applies ‘what is left’ to time as well: the food eaten according to rule in the time left after performing the sacrifices is the nectar. They reach Brahman, if they are seekers of liberation, in due course. For one who has not even one of the sacrifices named here, even this world, common to all beings, is not his.
Ramanuja gives ‘this world’ and ‘the other’ the sense of the aims of life. ‘This world’ means the worldly aims of dharma, wealth and pleasure; ‘the other’ means liberation. For one without the daily and occasional duties, even the first are not achieved; how then liberation?
Sridhara Swami puts it simply: even this human world, with its little happiness, is not for one devoid of sacrifice, so sacrifices must be performed in every way. Madhva’s note is combined with that of the previous verse.

For life today
There is a deep truth in the order of giving first and then receiving what is left. A meal eaten after sharing becomes ‘nectar’ not because of its taste but because of the mind behind it.
‘This world is not for one who does not sacrifice’ may sound harsh. But we can see around us how a life that gives nothing to anyone and keeps everything for itself grows poor from within.
