Context and commentary on verse 4.41
The three words of the chapter’s name come together here: yoga, renunciation of action, knowledge. Sridhara Swami says the last two verses gather up the two-fold devotion, to action and to knowledge, taught in the previous two chapters.
The compound ‘yoga-sannyasta-karma’ has two readings. For Shankara, the ‘yoga’ here is the vision of the highest truth, by which one has renounced actions, merit and demerit alike. The knowledge that cut his doubt is the vision of the oneness of the self and the Lord.
For Sridhara Swami, ‘yoga’ means the worship of the Supreme Lord, in which one has surrendered one’s actions to him. For Ramanuja, it describes one whose actions have taken the form of knowledge through the yoga taught. The endless old karma that causes bondage does not bind such a person.
Shankara and Sridhara Swami gloss ‘self-possessed’ as ‘not careless’, one who stays alert; Ramanuja as ‘one whose mind stands firm in what has been taught’. In the text available to us, Madhva has no separate comment on this verse.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
‘Atmavan’ is a lovely word: one who possesses himself, who does not lose himself to outside pressures.
The image of ‘cutting’ doubt is also worth noting. Some doubts do not untie themselves if one waits. A moment comes when a decision has to be taken on the basis of understanding.
