Context and commentary on verse 4.5
The first step of the answer is direct. Sridhara Swami says its intent is ‘I told it to Vivasvan in another form.’ Because Krishna’s power of knowledge is never diminished, he knows everything; because Arjuna is covered by ignorance, he does not.
Shankara states the same difference. Arjuna’s power of knowing is obstructed by merit and demerit. The Lord, whose nature is eternally pure, awake and free, has knowledge with no covering at all.
Ramanuja draws an important conclusion from this verse: the birth of the avatara is real. Krishna himself says ‘many births of mine have passed’, and with ‘and yours’ he sets Arjuna’s births beside them as the example. As real as Arjuna’s births are, so real are his. That is Ramanuja’s reading.
In the text available to us, Madhva has no separate comment on this verse. His position becomes clear in the next one.

For life today
Never mind past lives; most of our own story in this life is lost to memory. Many experiences that shaped our nature faded away in childhood.
The distance between teacher and student here is not one of rank but of sight. What one can see, the other cannot see yet; that is all. The humility to accept this is where learning begins.
