Context and commentary on verse 4.6
This is one of the Gita’s most important verses on the avatara. The answer to how the unborn can be born lies in two words, ‘prakriti’ and ‘atma-maya’. The three acharyas part company precisely in how they read them.
For Shankara, ‘my own prakriti’ is the Lord’s Vaishnava maya, made of the three gunas. The whole world is under its sway, and the soul deluded by it does not know Vasudeva, its own self. Keeping that maya under his control, he appears ‘as though embodied, as though born’, not in the ultimate sense as ordinary people are.
Ramanuja takes another road. Here prakriti means one’s own nature. Without giving up any of his qualities, being unborn, imperishable and Lord of all, he is born in his own form and by his own will. On the authority of the Vedic lexicon he reads ‘maya’ as ‘knowledge’, that is, his own resolve. He cites the Shruti ‘ajayamano bahudha vijayate’, the unborn one is born in many ways.
Sridhara Swami stands between the two. The Lord takes up his own prakriti, which is pure sattva, and descends by his own will, with his knowledge, strength and power undiminished.
Madhva says that in ‘avyayatma’ the word ‘atma’ also means the body: even the Lord’s body is imperishable. The word ‘own’ shows that prakriti is not independent but subject to him. Among Vasudeva and the others, who are born of prakriti, he appears as one born. ‘Atma-maya’ means his own knowledge and will. According to a text he quotes, through the powers named Shri, Bhu and the deluding Durga, the unborn Vishnu appears to the deluded as one who is born.

For life today
There is a deep difference in the phrase ‘by my own will’. To come because one is pushed is one thing; to come because one chooses is another. From outside, both may look the same.
We catch a small shadow of this in a teacher who sits down at a beginner’s level without forgetting what he knows. Coming down does not make him smaller.
