Context and commentary on verse 1.1 and 1.2
The Devi Mahatmya is part of the Markandeya Purana. In the common reckoning it is chapters 81 to 93 of that Purana, thirteen chapters in all. It is counted as seven hundred (saptashata) mantras, hence the name Durga Saptashati. It is also called the Chandi Patha.
In the Purana, Markandeya is describing the fourteen manvantaras (the age of each Manu) one by one to his disciple Kraushtuki. Tradition holds that we now live in the age of the seventh Manu, Vaivasvata. When Markandeya reaches the next, the eighth Manu Savarni, the story of the Devi opens. In an earlier birth Savarni was a king named Suratha, and the whole work is framed by how he became Manu through the grace of the Devi.
The opening Aim is the seed syllable of Sarasvati, also called the vagbija (the seed of speech). It is also the first seed of the Navarna mantra, the nine-syllable mantra Aim Hrim Klim Chamundayai Vichche. In the Gita Press edition and in many editions used for recitation, Om Aim stands at the head of the first chapter. Many take it to be a seed added by the tradition of recitation.
The Saptashati is traditionally divided into three charitras (story sections). The first chapter is the first charitra, chapters two to four the middle charitra, and chapters five to thirteen the last. In many editions Hrim stands at the start of the middle charitra and Klim at the start of the last. Many explain that the three seeds of the Navarna thus head the three charitras.
The Purana itself explains the name Savarni. Samjna, wife of the Sun, left in her place Chhaya, who looked just like her (savarna, of the same appearance). Being Chhaya’s son, he is Savarni. Also, with a verb of hearing such as nishamaya (listen), Sanskrit naturally puts the speaker in the genitive: gadato mama, from me as I speak.

For life today
The story begins with the word listen, and listen at length. On our phone screens we have grown used to finishing everything in a two-line summary.
But some things open only when heard slowly and in full. The first thing this work of thirteen chapters asks of us is attention.
