Context and commentary on verse 1.11
The word ‘satkrtah’, honoured, suggests that the sage received him before asking who he was or why he had come. Atithi-satkara, receiving a guest with respect, is a central part of hermitage life. For the defeated king it was the first honour he had met in a long while.
‘Kanchit kalam’, for some time, leaves the length of the stay open. ‘Tasthau’ is the perfect (lit) form of the root ‘stha’, to stand or stay, the form used when a narrator tells of past events he did not witness.
‘Itashchetashcha vicharan’, wandering here and there. His body has found shelter, but his steps have not yet found rest. ‘Vicharan’ is a present participle, a form for an action still going on, and it shows the wandering continuing.
This outward wandering is a prelude to an inward one. In the next mantra, ‘mamatvakrshtamanasah’, his mind drawn by the sense of ‘mine’, he begins to brood over the city he has lost. Even in the calm hermitage the mind runs back to what it left behind.

For life today
In the first days of retirement many of us wander about the house. We leaf through the morning paper twice over, or stand at the window not knowing how to fill the hours. Even with affection and respect all around, the mind does not settle at once.
Suratha too had shelter and a warm welcome, and still he wandered. The mind needs time to settle into a new place. It helps to look on that time with patience, in ourselves and in others.
