Context and commentary on verse 1.8
After the blow from outside comes the blow from within. The phrase ‘tatrapi svapure’, even there in his own city, carries the hurt. The place the king thought of as his last refuge turned against him.
The ministers receive three epithets: ‘balibhih’, powerful, ‘dushtaih’, wicked, and ‘duratmabhih’, evil-minded. Against them the king gets a single word, ‘durbalasya’, of the weak one. The placing of the words itself shows how strength has changed hands.
Texts on statecraft speak of seven limbs of a kingdom. Kautilya’s Arthashastra lists them as svamin (the ruler), amatya (the minister), janapada (the land and its people), durga (the fort), kosha (the treasury), danda (the army) and mitra (the ally). Here the ministers themselves turn and carry off the treasury and the army. In a single mantra three limbs slip from the king’s hands.
‘Chapahrtam’ is the sandhi form of ‘cha’, and, with ‘apahrtam’, was carried off. Both the treasury and the army were lost. In the next mantra the remaining ‘svamya’, lordship itself, goes too.

For life today
When we are strong, everyone around us seems to be on our side. When our standing at work loosens, some files move to another desk and invitations to some meetings stop coming. That hurt is real.
But the mantra quietly raises another question too. How do we behave when someone else grows weak? The real test of loyalty comes when the strength is on our side.
