Context and commentary on verse 1.9
‘Hrtasvamyah’ means one whose svamya, lordship, has been taken away. In the previous mantra the treasury and the army were lost. Now even his standing as king remained in name only.
‘Mrgayavyajena’ means on the pretext of hunting. A king riding out to hunt is an everyday sight that no one would question. It also spares him the shame of being seen to flee. Many read fear for his life behind the pretext as well.
The word ‘ekaki’, alone, deserves notice. A king going hunting usually rides with a retinue. Here his only companion is a horse. The real story of the Saptashati begins from this solitude.
‘Gahanam vanam’, a dense forest. In the Puranas, people who have lost a kingdom going into the forest is a familiar picture. Here, though, the forest leads him in the next mantra to the hermitage of a sage.

For life today
Sometimes we need to get a little distance from everyone, but cannot say so plainly. So we too find a pretext: a trip to the shop, a short walk.
Such a solitary walk is no mark of weakness. A tired mind is looking for room to breathe. Suratha’s lonely ride, too, took him to the very place he needed.
