ಅದ್ವೈತ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಜ್ಞಾನವು ಗುರುವಿನಿಂದ ಶಿಷ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಬರುವ ಒಂದು ಸರಪಳಿ. ಆ ಸರಪಳಿಯ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಕೊಂಡಿಯನ್ನೂ ಹೆಸರು ಹೇಳಿ ನೆನೆದು ನಮಿಸುವ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರವನ್ನು ಗುರುಪರಂಪರಾ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ನೆನೆಯುವುದು ಕೇವಲ ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಪಠಣವಲ್ಲ. ನಮಗೆ ಬಂದ ಉಪದೇಶದ ಮೂಲವನ್ನು ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆಯಿಂದ ಸ್ಮರಿಸುವ ಸಾಧನ.
In the Advaita tradition knowledge comes from teacher to student like a chain. A guru parampara stotra names each link of that chain and bows to it. Remembering them is not a recital of history. It is a way of gratefully recalling the source of the teaching that reached us.
ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲು ಗುರುರ್ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಶ್ಲೋಕ, ನಂತರ ಒಂದರಿಂದ ನಲವತ್ತೆಂಟರವರೆಗೆ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬೊಬ್ಬ ಗುರುವಿನ ಸ್ತುತಿ, ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಇಡೀ ಪರಂಪರೆಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರದ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇವೆ. ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳು ಗುರುವಿನ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಕೊನೆಯ ಪಾದದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿ ನಾವು ಅವರನ್ನು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂದು ಮುಗಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.
The stotra begins with the well known verse Gurur Brahma, then gives verses 1 to 48 each praising a guru, and ends with a verse bowing to the whole line. Most verses name the guru in the last line and close by saying that we take refuge in him.

ಗುರುರ್ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ ಗುರುರ್ವಿಷ್ಣುರ್ಗುರುರ್ದೇವೋ ಮಹೇಶ್ವರ: ।
ಗುರುಸ್ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ಪರಂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ತಸ್ಮೈ ಶ್ರೀಗುರವೇ ನಮಃ ॥
ಶುದ್ಧಸ್ಫಟಿಕಸಂಕಾಶಂ ಶುದ್ಧವಿದ್ಯಾಪ್ರದಾಯಕಂ ।
ಶುದ್ಧಂ ಪೂರ್ಣಂ ಚಿದಾನಂದಂ ಸದಾಶಿವಮಹಂ ಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 1 ॥

ಗೂಢಾ ಮಾಯಾ ಯಸ್ಯ ವಾಕ್ಯೈರ್ವ್ರೀಡಿತಾ ವಿಲಯಂ ಗತಾ ।
ಕ್ರೀಡಂತಂ ವಿದ್ಯಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ಗೌಡಪಾದಂ ತಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 9 ॥
ಜೀವೇಶಭೇದರಹಿತಂ ನಾವಿಕಂ ಭವವಾರಿಧೇಃ ।
ಭಾವಾಭಾವವಿದೂರಸ್ಥಂ ಗೋವಿಂದಂ ಗುರುಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 10 ॥
ಶಂಕಾರೂಪೇಣ ಮಚ್ಚಿತ್ತಂ ಪಂಕೀಕೃತಮಭೂದ್ಯಯಾ ।
ಕಿಂಕರೀ ಯಸ್ಯ ಸಾ ಮಾಯಾ ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 11 ॥
ವಿಶ್ವಂ ಮಾಯಾಮಯತ್ವೇನ ರೂಪಿತಂ ಯತ್ಪ್ರಬೋಧತಃ ।
ವಿಶ್ವಂ ಚ ಯತ್ಸ್ವರೂಪಂ ತಂ ವಾರ್ತಿಕಾಚಾರ್ಯಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 12 ॥
ಅನಾದ್ಯವಿದ್ಯಾಮುತ್ಸಾರ್ಯ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಘನರೂಪತಾಂ ।
ಯೋ ಬೋಧಯತಿ ಸಚ್ಛಿಷ್ಯಾನ್ ತಂ ಬೋಧಘನಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 13 ॥
ಸಿತಾಘನಾದಿದೃಷ್ಟಾಂತೈರ್ಯತ್ಸ್ವರೂಪಂ ಶ್ರುತಿರ್ಜಗೌ ।
ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಘನ ಏವೇತಿ ತಂ ಜ್ಞಾನಘನಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 14 ॥
ಜ್ಞಾನಾನಾಮುತ್ತಮಂ ಜ್ಞಾನಂ ಜ್ಞಾನಿನಾಮುತ್ತಮೋ ಯತಃ ।
ಜ್ಞಾನೋತ್ತಮ ಇತಿ ಖ್ಯಾತಂ ಗುರುಂ ತಮಹಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 15 ॥
ಜ್ಞಾನನಿಶ್ರೇಣಿಮಾಲಂಬ್ಯ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಖ್ಯಂ ಗಿರಿಮುನ್ನತಂ ।
ಆರುಹ್ಯ ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯೋ ಯಸ್ತಂ ಜ್ಞಾನಗಿರಿಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 16 ॥
ದುರ್ವಾದಿದುಷ್ಟಮಾತಂಗವಿದಾರಣಪಟೀಯಸೇ ।
ನಮಃ ಶ್ರೀಸಿಂಹಗಿರಯೇ ಗುರವೇ ದಿವ್ಯಚಕ್ಷುಷೇ ॥ 17 ॥
ಈಪ್ಸಿತಾರ್ಥಪ್ರದೋ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಣತಾನಾಂ ಚ ದೇಹಿನಾಂ ।
ಯತಿರೀಶ್ವರತೀರ್ಥಾಖ್ಯ: ತಂ ನಮಾಮಿ ಗುರುಂ ಶಿವಂ ॥ 18 ॥
ಶ್ರುತಿಮಸ್ತಕಕೂಟಸ್ಥಮಜ್ಞಾನದ್ವಿಪಭೇದಿನಂ ।
ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ್ರರಾಜಮೂರ್ತಿಂ ತಂ ನೃಸಿಂಹಂ ಗುರುಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 19 ॥
ಅವಿದ್ಯಾಚ್ಛನ್ನಭಾವಾನಾಂ ನೃಣಾಂ ವಿದ್ಯೋಪದೇಶತಃ ।
ಪ್ರಕಾಶಯತಿ ಯಸ್ತತ್ತ್ವಂ ತಂ ವಿದ್ಯಾತೀರ್ಥಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 20 ॥
ಅಜ್ಞಾನಾಂ ಜಾಹ್ನವೀ ತೀರ್ಥಂ ವಿದ್ಯಾತೀರ್ಥಂ ವಿವೇಕಿನಾಂ ।
ಸರ್ವೇಷಾಂ ಸುಖದಂ ತೀರ್ಥಂ ಭಾರತೀತೀರ್ಥಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 21 ॥
ಅವಿದ್ಯಾರಣ್ಯಕಾಂತಾರೇ ಭ್ರಮತಾಂ ಪ್ರಾಣಿನಾಂ ಸದಾ ।
ವಿದ್ಯಾಮಾರ್ಗೋಪದೇಷ್ಟಾರಂ ವಿದ್ಯಾರಣ್ಯಗುರುಂ ಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 22 ॥
ವಿದ್ಯಾವಿದ್ಯಾವಿವೇಕೇನ ಪಾರಂ ಸಂಸಾರವಾರಿಧೇಃ ।
ಪ್ರಾಪಯತ್ಯನಿಶಂ ಭಕ್ತಾನ್ ತಂ ವಿದ್ಯಾರಣ್ಯಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 23 ॥
ಅವಿದ್ಯಾರಣ್ಯಸಂಕ್ಲೇಶಕೃಶಾನುಭೃಶತಾಪಿತಃ ।
ಸಂಶ್ರಯೇ ಸತತಂ ಭೂತ್ಯೈ ಚಂದ್ರಶೇಖರಚಂದ್ರಿಕಾಂ ॥ 24 ॥
ಅವಿದ್ಯಾಖ್ಯದ್ವಿಪದ್ವೈಧೀಭಾವೇ ದಕ್ಷಂ ಸಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ।
ನೃಸಿಂಹಭಾರತೀಶಾಖ್ಯಹರಿಂ ಶ್ರುತಿಗುಹಾಶ್ರಯಂ ॥ 25 ॥
ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮತಾಂ ಯಾಂತಿ ಯಮಾಶ್ರಿತ್ಯ ಜನಾಃ ಶ್ರಯೇ ।
ಕ್ಷರಾಕ್ಷರಮತೀತಂ ತಂ ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮಯೋಗಿನಂ ॥ 26 ॥
ಕಿಂಕರೀಕೃತಭೂಪಾಲಂ ಪಂಕೇರುಹಸಮಾನನಂ ।
ತಂ ಕಾರುಣ್ಯಪಯೋರಾಶಿಂ ಶಂಕರಾಖ್ಯಂ ಗುರುಂ ಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 27 ॥
ಚಂದ್ರಿಕಾಧವಲೋದಾರಸಾಂದ್ರಕೀರ್ತಿಚ್ಛಟಾಧರಂ ।
ಇಂದ್ರಿಯೈರ್ದುರ್ಜಯಂ ನೌಮಿ ಚಂದ್ರಶೇಖರಭಾರತೀಂ ॥ 28 ॥
ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಲಯಂ ಲಸಮಾನಗುಣೋತ್ಕಟಂ ।
ಬಿಸಜಾಕ್ಷಾರ್ಚಕಂ ಭಕ್ತ್ಯಾ ನೃಸಿಂಹಂ ತೀರ್ಥಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 29 ॥
ಪುರುಹೂತಾದಿದೇವೌಘಪೌರುಷೇಯಗುಣೋತ್ಕಟಂ ।
ಪುರುಷಾರ್ಥಪ್ರದಂ ನೌಮಿ ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮಯೋಗಿನಂ ॥ 30 ॥
ಕಾಮದ್ವಿರದಪಂಚಾಸ್ಯರಾಮಣೀಯಕಮಂದಿರಂ ।
ಸೋಮೋಪಮಾನನಂ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಚಂದ್ರಗುರುಂ ಭಜೇ ॥ 31 ॥
ಸುರಸಿಂಧುಲಸತ್ಕೀರ್ತಿಂ ಸ್ಮರಸಿಂಧುಘಟೋದ್ಭವಂ ।
ನಾರಸಿಂಹಾರ್ಚಕಂ ಶ್ರೀಮನ್ನಾರಸಿಂಹಯತಿಂ ಭಜೇ ॥ 32 ॥
ಸಾರಾಸಾರವಿವೇಕಜ್ಞಂ ಮಾರಕಾನನಕುಂಜರಂ ।
ಶೂರಂ ದಾನೇ ಚ ನಿರತಂ ನಾರಸಿಂಹಯತಿಂ ಭಜೇ ॥ 33 ॥
ನೃಸಿಂಹತಾಂ ಪ್ರಯಾಂತ್ಯಾಶು ಯಮಾಶ್ರಿತ್ಯ ಜನಾ ಭುವಿ ।
ತಂ ನೃಸಿಂಹಗುರುಂ ವಂದೇ ದ್ವಿಗುಣೋಪಪದಂ ಸದಾ ॥ 34 ॥
ತಂ ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾಭಯದಂ ವಿಭವೈರನ್ವಿತಂ ಪರಂ ।
ನಾರಸಿಂಹಂ ಗುರುಂ ಚಾಪಿ ನವಂ ಜ್ಞಾನಾರ್ಣವಂ ಭಜೇ ॥ 35 ॥
ಸತ್ಯಸ್ವರೂಪಂ ಸದ್ಜ್ಞಾನನಿಷ್ಠಂ ಸಾಕ್ಷಾಚ್ಛಿವಂ ಪರಂ ।
ಸದಾ ದಾನರತಂ ದಾಂತಂ ಸಚ್ಚಿದಾನಂದಮಾಶ್ರಯೇ ॥ 36 ॥
ಮಹಾಮೇರುಸಮಂ ಧೈರ್ಯೇ ಮಾಧುರ್ಯೇಽಪ್ಯಮೃತೋಪಮಂ ।
ಊಹಾಪೋಹಾರ್ಥನಿಷ್ಣಾತಂ ನಾರಸಿಂಹಂ ಗುರುಂ ಭಜೇ ॥ 37 ॥
ಸಚ್ಚಿತ್ತಾಂಬುಜಮಿತ್ರಾಯ ಸಚ್ಚರಿತ್ರಯುಜೇ ನಮಃ ।
ಸಚ್ಚಿದಾನಂದಭಾರತ್ಯೈ ಸಚ್ಚಿದಾನಂದಮೂರ್ತಯೇ ॥ 38 ॥
ಸಚ್ಚಿದನಂದಭಾರತ್ಯೈ ನವ್ಯಾಯಾಸ್ತು ನಮೋಽನಿಶಂ ।

ಮಾರಮಾತಂಗಪಂಚಾಸ್ಯಂ ಮದಸರ್ಪದ್ವಿಜರ್ಷಭಂ ।
ನೃಸಿಂಹಭಾರತೀಂ ವಂದೇ ಜಿತಾಕ್ಷತುರಗಂ ಸದಾ ॥ 40 ॥
ತತ್ತ್ವಮಸ್ಯಾದಿವೇದಾಂತವಾಕ್ಯಾರ್ಥಜ್ಞಾನವಾರಿಧೇಃ ।
ಪೂರ್ಣಚಂದ್ರಮಸಂ ವಂದೇ ಸಚ್ಚಿದಾನಂದಯೋಗಿನಂ ॥ 41 ॥
ಅಭಿನವಪದಪೂರ್ವಾನ್ ಸಚ್ಚಿದಾನಂದಸಂಜ್ಞಾನ್
ನಿಗಮಶಿಖರವೇದ್ಯಾನ್ ನಿತ್ಯಕಲ್ಯಾಣರೂಪಾನ್ ।

दुर्वादिदुष्टमातंगविदारणपटीयसे ।
नमः श्रीसिंहगिरये गुरवे दिव्यचक्षुषे ॥ 17 ॥
ईप्सितार्थप्रदो नित्यं प्रणतानां च देहिनां ।
यतिरीश्वरतीर्थाख्य: तं नमामि गुरुं शिवं ॥ 18 ॥
श्रुतिमस्तककूटस्थमज्ञानद्विपभेदिनं ।
श्रीमंत्रराजमूर्तिं तं नृसिंहं गुरुमाश्रये ॥ 19 ॥
अविद्याच्छन्नभावानां नृणां विद्योपदेशतः ।
प्रकाशयति यस्तत्त्वं तं विद्यातीर्थमाश्रये ॥ 20 ॥
अज्ञानां जाह्नवी तीर्थं विद्यातीर्थं विवेकिनां ।
सर्वेषां सुखदं तीर्थं भारतीतीर्थमाश्रये ॥ 21 ॥
अविद्यारण्यकांतारे भ्रमतां प्राणिनां सदा ।
विद्यामार्गोपदेष्टारं विद्यारण्यगुरुं श्रये ॥ 22 ॥
विद्याविद्याविवेकेन पारं संसारवारिधेः ।
प्रापयत्यनिशं भक्तान् तं विद्यारण्यमाश्रये ॥ 23 ॥
अविद्यारण्यसंक्लेशकृशानुभृशतापितः ।
संश्रये सततं भूत्यै चंद्रशेखरचंद्रिकां ॥ 24 ॥
अविद्याख्यद्विपद्वैधीभावे दक्षं समाश्रये ।
नृसिंहभारतीशाख्यहरिं श्रुतिगुहाश्रयं ॥ 25 ॥
पुरुषोत्तमतां यांति यमाश्रित्य जनाः श्रये ।
क्षराक्षरमतीतं तं पुरुषोत्तमयोगिनं ॥ 26 ॥
किंकरीकृतभूपालं पंकेरुहसमाननं ।
तं कारुण्यपयोराशिं शंकराख्यं गुरुं श्रये ॥ 27 ॥
चंद्रिकाधवलोदारसांद्रकीर्तिच्छटाधरं ।

ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಪ್ರಾರಂಭ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಗುರುವೇ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ, ಗುರುವೇ ವಿಷ್ಣು, ಗುರುವೇ ಮಹೇಶ್ವರ. ಗುರುವೇ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮ. ಆ ಶ್ರೀಗುರುವಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ.
The guru is Brahma, the guru is Vishnu, the guru is Maheshwara. The guru is the Supreme Brahman in person. Salutations to that revered guru. - 1 ಸ್ಫಟಿಕದಂತೆ ಶುದ್ಧನಾದ, ಶುದ್ಧ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವ, ಶುದ್ಧ, ಪೂರ್ಣ, ಚಿದಾನಂದ ಸ್ವರೂಪನಾದ ಸದಾಶಿವನನ್ನು ನಾವು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಮರಿಸಿರುವ ಗುರುಗಳು ಭಗವಾನ್ ಶ್ರೀ ಸದಾಶಿವ. ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಗುರುಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರು ದೇವ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ಗುರು.
We take refuge in Sadashiva, pure like crystal, giver of pure knowledge, pure, full, and of the nature of consciousness and bliss. The guru remembered here is the divine Sri Sadashiva. In the Sringeri Guru parampara list he is the 1st guru of the divine lineage. - 2 ಎಲ್ಲೆಯನ್ನು ಮೀರಿದ, ಆದಿ ಅಂತ್ಯ ಇಲ್ಲದ, ನಾಮೋಚ್ಚಾರಣವೇ ಔಷಧವಾದ, ಬಯಸಿದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಫಲವನ್ನೂ ಕೊಡುವ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಷ್ಣುವನ್ನು ನಾವು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಮರಿಸಿರುವ ಗುರುಗಳು ಭಗವಾನ್ ಶ್ರೀ ನಾರಾಯಣ (ವಿಷ್ಣು). ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಗುರುಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರು ದೇವ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಗುರು.
We take refuge in Sri Vishnu, who is beyond limits, without beginning or end, whose very name is a medicine, and who grants every desired fruit. The guru remembered here is the divine Sri Narayana (Vishnu). In the Sringeri Guru parampara list he is the 2nd guru of the divine lineage. - 3 ಯೋಗಿಗಳ ಹೃದಯಕಮಲದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ, ಶರಣಾದ ಜೀವರ ಹಿತದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರತನಾದ, ವೇದಗಳ ಜನ್ಮಭೂಮಿಯಾದ ಚತುರ್ಮುಖನನ್ನು ನಾವು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಮರಿಸಿರುವ ಗುರುಗಳು ಭಗವಾನ್ ಶ್ರೀ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ. ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಗುರುಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರು ದೇವ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಮೂರನೆಯ ಗುರು.
We take refuge in the four faced Brahma, who dwells in the heart lotus of yogis, is devoted to the good of beings who bow to him, and is the birthplace of the Vedas. In the Sringeri Guru parampara list he is the 3rd guru of the divine lineage. - 4 ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸಮಾಧಾನ ಚಿತ್ತನಾದ, ಅಳತೆಗೆ ಸಿಗದ ತೇಜಸ್ಸಿನ, ಪರಮಾನಂದವನ್ನು ವಶಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ವಸಿಷ್ಠ ಗುರುವನ್ನು ನಾವು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಮರಿಸಿರುವ ಗುರುಗಳು ಪೂಜ್ಯ ಶ್ರೀ ವಸಿಷ್ಠ ಮಹರ್ಷಿ. ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಗುರುಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರು ಋಷಿ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ಗುರು.
We take refuge in the guru Vasishtha, deeply composed, of immeasurable splendour, who has made supreme bliss his own. The guru remembered here is the revered Vasishtha Maharishi. In the Sringeri Guru parampara list he is the 1st guru of the sage lineage. - 5 ಕಪ್ಪೆಚಿಪ್ಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿ ತೋರುವಂತೆ ನನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲ್ಪಿತವಾದ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ನೀಗಿಸಿದ ಗುರುಗಳಾದ ಪೂಜ್ಯ ಶ್ರೀ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಾವು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಗುರುಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರು ಋಷಿ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಗುರು. ಎರಡನೆಯ ಪಾದದ ಅರ್ಥ ಸ್ಥೂಲ.

That list begins with the divine lineage, the sage lineage and the Acharyas before Sri Shankara Bhagavatpada, who carry no number or years there. The count of the peetham’s Acharyas begins with Sri Shankara Bhagavatpada.
