ವಿಷದ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಬಾರದವನು ಹಾವಿನ ಬುಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಕೈ ಹಾಕುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಎಚ್ಚರ ಎಲ್ಲ ವಿದ್ಯೆಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಇರಬೇಕಾದದ್ದು.
ಕಾವ್ಯದ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಎಚ್ಚರ ಇಲ್ಲದವರನ್ನು ಈ ಉಪಜಾತಿ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಗಾರುಡಿಕದ ಚಿತ್ರದಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಅಜ್ಞಾತಪಾಣ್ಡಿತ್ಯರಹಸ್ಯಮುದ್ರಾ
ಯೇ ಕಾವ್ಯಮಾರ್ಗೇ ದಧತೇಽಭಿಮಾನಮ್ ।
ತೇ ಗಾರುಡೀಯಾನನಧೀತ್ಯ ಮನ್ತ್ರಾ-
ನ್ಹಾಲಾಹಲಾಸ್ವಾದನಮಾರಭನ್ತೇ ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಅಜ್ಞಾತ (अज्ञात, ajñāta) = ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲದ (unknown)
- ಪಾಣ್ಡಿತ್ಯ ರಹಸ್ಯ (पाण्डित्य रहस्य, pāṇḍitya rahasya) = ಪಾಂಡಿತ್ಯದ ಒಳಗುಟ್ಟು (the secret of real learning)
- ಮುದ್ರಾ (मुद्रा, mudrā) = ಗುರುತು, ಮೊಹರು (the stamp, the mark)
- ಯೇ (ये, ye) = ಯಾರು (those who)
- ಕಾವ್ಯಮಾರ್ಗೇ (काव्यमार्गे, kāvyamārge) = ಕಾವ್ಯದ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ (on the path of poetry)
- ದಧತೇ (दधते, dadhate) = ಹೊತ್ತುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ (carry, hold up)
- ಅಭಿಮಾನಮ್ (अभिमानम्, abhimānam) = ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯನ್ನು (pride)
- ತೇ (ते, te) = ಅವರು (they)
- ಗಾರುಡೀಯಾನ್ (गारुडीयान्, gāruḍīyān) = ಗರುಡಮಂತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು (the Garuda spells)
- ಅನಧೀತ್ಯ (अनधीत्य, anadhītya) = ಕಲಿಯದೆ (without having learnt)
- ಮನ್ತ್ರಾನ್ (मन्त्रान्, mantrān) = ಮಂತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು (the mantras)
- ಹಾಲಾಹಲಾಸ್ವಾದನಮ್ (हालाहलास्वादनम्, hālāhalāsvādanam) = ಹಾಲಾಹಲ ವಿಷವನ್ನು ಸವಿಯುವುದನ್ನು (the tasting of halahala poison)
- ಆರಭನ್ತೇ (आरभन्ते, ārabhante) = ಆರಂಭಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ (they set about)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಪಾಂಡಿತ್ಯದ ಒಳಗುಟ್ಟಿನ ಗುರುತೇ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಕಾವ್ಯದ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಹೊತ್ತುಕೊಳ್ಳುವವರು, ಗರುಡಮಂತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಕಲಿಯದೆ ಹಾಲಾಹಲ ವಿಷವನ್ನು ಸವಿಯಲು ಹೊರಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Those who take pride in the path of poetry without knowing even the mark of what learning really is are setting about tasting halahala poison without having learnt the Garuda spells.
ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita
ಗಾರುಡೀಯ ಮಂತ್ರ ಎಂದರೆ ವಿಷ ಇಳಿಸುವ ಮಂತ್ರ. ಗರುಡ ಸರ್ಪಗಳ ಶತ್ರು ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಆ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿದೆ.
Garudiya mantras are the spells used against venom. The name comes from the belief that Garuda is the enemy of serpents.
ಮುದ್ರಾ ಎಂದರೆ ಗುರುತು, ಮೊಹರು. ಪಾಂಡಿತ್ಯದ ರಹಸ್ಯದ ಮುದ್ರೆಯೇ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದಾಗ, ಒಳಗೆ ಏನಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಬಿಡಿ, ಹೊರಗಿನ ಗುರುತೂ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
Mudra means a mark or a seal. To say they do not know even the seal of learning’s secret is to say that, never mind what is inside, they do not know the outward sign either.
ಆಸ್ವಾದನ ಎಂದರೆ ರುಚಿ ನೋಡುವುದು. ವಿಷವನ್ನು ಕುಡಿಯುವುದು ಎನ್ನದೆ ಸವಿಯುವುದು ಎಂದಿರುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಚುಚ್ಚು ಇದೆ. ಅವರು ಅದನ್ನು ಸಂತೋಷದಿಂದಲೇ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
Asvadana is savouring. The sting is in saying they savour the poison rather than swallow it. They go at it with relish.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಹೊಸ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯ ಮೊದಲ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಆತ್ಮವಿಶ್ವಾಸ ಹೆಚ್ಚು. ಮುಂದೆ ಕಲಿತಷ್ಟೂ ಅದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಏರಿಳಿತವನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸುವವರೆಲ್ಲ ನೋಡಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.
Confidence runs highest at the first stage of a new subject, and settles a little as one learns more. Everyone who teaches in medicine has watched that curve.
ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಬಾರದು ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಿದ್ಧತೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಹೊರುವುದನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಇನ್ನೂ ಕಲಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವೆ ಎಂದು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವವನಿಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವ ಆಪತ್ತೂ ಇಲ್ಲ.
The verse is not against trying. It is against carrying pride without preparation. Anyone who says he is still learning is in no danger here.
