Magh Bihu, also called Bhogali Bihu, is the harvest festival of Assam. It falls on the first day of Magh, the solar month that begins after the sun enters Makara, in the middle of January. It marks the end of the harvest, when the year’s rice is in, and its other name, Bhogali, comes from bhog, enjoyment and feasting. It is one of the three Bihus of the Assamese year; Bohag Bihu, in April, opens the new year.
Uruka, the night before
The festival begins on the evening before, called Uruka, the last day of the month Pooh. Young people build makeshift huts of bamboo, leaves and thatch, the bhelaghar, and a structure of the same materials called the meji, often out in the harvested fields. The night’s feast is cooked and eaten there, by a family or by the whole neighbourhood together. The women prepare the foods of the next day: chira, which is flattened rice, curd, the rice cakes called pitha, among them til pitha made with sesame, and laru, sweets of coconut.
The meji at dawn
On the morning of Magh Bihu people bathe and then set fire to the meji. The fire is a prayer to Agni, the god of fire, and the people pray to their ancestral gods for blessings in the year ahead. The bhelaghar too is burned. The rest of the day goes in feasting on what was made on Uruka, in visiting, and in games. In the towns the shared feast of Uruka night has largely fallen away, and many households buy their pitha and laru ready made.
One turning of the sun
Magh Bihu is Assam’s form of the harvest festival that the rest of India keeps at the same turning of the sun, Makara Sankranti. The night before it in Punjab is Lohri, also kept round a fire; in Tamil Nadu the days are Bhogi and Pongal; in Karnataka it is the day of ellu bella. The bonfire of Uruka and the meji, Lohri’s bonfire and Bhogi’s fire of old things are three different customs at the same time of the year, and none is borrowed from the others.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives Magh Bihu on Magh 1 in the solar calendar that Assam shares with Bengal. That calendar has its own rule for which day opens a month: when the sun enters the new sign between sunrise and midnight, the next day is the first of the month, and when it enters after midnight, the day after that. Uruka is the day before Magh 1. Because this rule differs from the Tamil one and from the rule for the sankranti’s own day, Magh Bihu often falls a day after Pongal and two days after Lohri. Anudina gave 15 January in 2026, as the Assam holiday list did, and gives 15 January in 2027.
It is an Assam observance. Anudina shows it under the North Indian custom, and under the South Indian custom only when “Show festivals of other regions too” is turned on.
