Bhogi is the first day of the harvest festival of Pongal in Tamil Nadu, and of Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is the last day of the Tamil month Margazhi, the eve of Thai 1 and of Makara Sankranti, and it falls on the 13th or 14th of January. It is a day of clearing out. What is old and past use is burned, the house is cleaned and decorated, and the home is made ready for the harvest days that follow.
The fire at dawn
Early in the morning a bonfire is lit in front of the house or in the street, and old mats, worn baskets, broken furniture and other household things past use are thrown into it. The fire is read as letting go of the old, of habits as well as things, to make room for the new. In the Telugu country these fires are the bhogi mantalu. In Tamil Nadu the day’s prayers go to Indra, the king of the gods and the giver of rain, with thanks for the rains of the year and the hope of good rains in the year ahead.
The rest of the day
In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana the women sprinkle the ground before the house with cow dung and water and draw muggulu, the rangoli of the season, and set on them gobbemmalu, small balls of cow dung decorated with turmeric, kumkum and flowers. In the evening comes bhogi pallu: jujube fruit, regi pallu in Telugu, with pieces of sugarcane, flowers and coins, is poured over the heads of small children, for their health, and the children gather up the coins and sweets.
In the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu the day has the kappu kattu, in which leaves of neem, avaram and poolappu are tied along the roofs and walls of the house to keep harm away. Maharashtra also keeps a Bhogi on the eve of Sankranti, with bajra bread sprinkled with sesame and a dish of mixed vegetables. In Karnataka the same day is the last of Dhanurmasa, the month of worship before dawn.
One festival over several days
Bhogi is the opening of a single festival. In Tamil Nadu it is followed by Thai Pongal, when the new rice is boiled over for the Sun, then by Mattu Pongal, the day of the cattle, and then by Kaanum Pongal, the day of visiting family. In the Telugu country the three days are Bhogi, Sankranti and Kanuma, the last for the livestock. The old is cleared away first so that the new harvest can be welcomed into a clean house.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives Bhogi on the day before Thai 1, the first day of the Tamil solar month in which the sun is in Makara. By the Tamil rule, Thai 1 is the day of the sun’s entry into Makara when the entry comes before sunset, and the next day when it comes after sunset; Bhogi is the day before that. The next Bhogi Anudina gives is 14 January 2027.
The two kinds of Tamil almanac can differ by a day here. The thirukanitha almanacs follow the observed sun, as Anudina does; the vakya almanacs, which the Tamil Nadu government’s holiday list follows, use the Surya Siddhanta. When they part, Anudina shows the vakya date beside its own. In 2026 Bhogi was 13 January by the observed sun and 14 January by the vakya almanacs. The day appears under the South Indian custom, for the Tamil and Telugu regions, and under the North Indian custom only when “Show festivals of other regions too” is turned on.
