Context and commentary on verse 10.20
The list of glories begins with the innermost: the Self in the heart of every being. Shankara sees this as an order for meditation: he should be meditated on always as the inner Self. Those who cannot do so may think of him in the things named next. He gives two meanings for the name ‘Gudakesha’: one who has conquered sleep, or one with thick hair.
Ramanuja unfolds the word ‘Self’: beings are his body and he is their Self, that is, their support, their ruler and their master. For this he quotes the Gita’s ‘sarvasya chaham hridi sannivishtah’ (15.15) and ‘ishvarah sarvabhutanam hriddeshe ‘rjuna tishthati’ (18.61). Sridhara Swami calls this verse the description of his sovereign form: he alone is the cause of birth, continuance and dissolution. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
It is worth noticing that the list begins within us, and not with the sun and moon outside. The first place to look for God is our own heart.
‘Beginning, middle and end’: birth, life and death are all in him. If this is remembered in the hospital’s labour room and in its intensive care unit alike, the same reverence arises for both.
