Context and commentary on verse 10.33
The letter A is the root of all letters. Ramanuja and Sridhara Swami quote the scripture ‘akaro vai sarva vak’, A alone is all speech. As the rest of the passage quoted by Sridhara Swami says, that same A, made manifest through the consonants and sibilants, becomes many forms. Why the dvandva among compounds? In it both words are equally important. Sridhara Swami’s example is ‘ramakrishnau’, Rama and Krishna.
Shankara gives two senses for ‘imperishable Time’: ordinary time made of moments and so on, or the supreme Lord who is the time of time itself. ‘Dhata’ for him is the one who ordains the fruits of action. For Ramanuja the dhata is the four-faced Hiranyagarbha who creates everything. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

At the first lesson in letters, the child writes the letter A first. All great learning begins with a small first step.
In a dvandva compound both words are equal. In marriage, in friendship and between doctor and patient too, the bond grows strong when both voices carry equal weight.
