Context and commentary on verse 12.11
The last rung of the ladder: giving up the fruit of action. For Shankara ‘madyoga’ means performing actions by offering them to him. Taking refuge in that, keeping the mind restrained, let go of the fruit of all actions. Sridhara Swami calls this another path, given to one unable to be fully established in the Lord’s own ways: take refuge in him alone, and give up the fruit of obligatory rites such as the agnihotra.
Ramanuja’s sense is distinctive. For him ‘even this’ means those works that are limbs of bhakti yoga. If even they are not possible, take refuge in the yoga of the imperishable taught in the first six chapters, that is, contemplation of the nature of the self, which gives rise to supreme devotion. As a means to that, do your work giving up its fruit. The sense that the Lord alone is dear, he says, arises only in one whose sins have all worn away. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

The beauty of this ladder lies in its compassion. Krishna leaves no one out: if this is not possible, then that, and if not that, then another. There is a rung for everyone.
Good doctors are like this too. ‘If you cannot manage this much exercise, walk ten minutes a day’: they show the rung that suits the patient’s strength.
