Context and commentary on verse 12.3
Here Shankara gives his well-known definition of ‘upasana’: making the object of worship, as the scripture describes it, the object of the mind, approaching it, and dwelling on it for a long time in a continuous flow of the same awareness, like a stream of oil. He also unfolds the qualities of the imperishable: being unmanifest it cannot be put into words, it pervades all like space, and since it is not an object of the senses it cannot be thought by the mind either. ‘Kuta’ is what looks good outside but is flawed within, that is, maya, the seed of worldly existence. ‘Kutastha’ is what abides in it as its overseer, or else what stands unmoving like a heap.
For Ramanuja all these qualities belong to the individual self. Being other than the body, it cannot be indicated by words such as ‘god’ or ‘human’, and so it is ‘anirdeshya’. Being present in all bodies, it is ‘sarvatraga’. Not bound to the particular shape of any body and alike in all, it is ‘kutastha’. Madhva takes the third and fourth verses together. He links the words ‘anirdeshya’ and ‘avyakta’ to descriptions of prakriti in the Bhagavata, the Nasadiya hymn of the Rigveda and the Manusmriti, and gives ‘kutastha’ the sense of abiding in space.

Shankara’s image of ‘a stream of oil’ is one of the loveliest pictures of meditation. Not attention in broken pieces, but an unbroken flow.
Amid today’s phone notifications that flow is hard. The practice of keeping the phone away for a few minutes a day and holding the mind on one thing strengthens attention.
