Context and commentary on verse 12.8
From here a ladder begins: if this cannot be done, then that, and if not that either, then another. The first rung is the highest. Shankara states the difference between mind and understanding: the mind forms ideas and doubts, the understanding decides. Both are to be settled in him.
The acharyas read ‘ata urdhvam’, after this, differently. For Shankara it means after the body falls. So too for Sridhara Swami: having gained knowledge by my grace, you will dwell in me after death. Ramanuja reads it as ‘right after that’: as soon as you set your mind on him with the resolve ‘he alone is the supreme goal’, you dwell in him. He gives the reason: this path has the highest fruit, is easy, and bears fruit quickly. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
The mind desires, the understanding decides. When both face the same direction, the work moves forward.
This is true of healthy habits too. The wish ‘I should take a morning walk’ is not enough. The decision ‘I will set out at six tomorrow’ is needed.
