Context and commentary on verse 13.6
The surprise of this verse is that desire, aversion, pleasure and pain are also part of the field. Shankara gives the reason: they are properties of the inner organ, and because they can be known they are the field. He defines desire as the longing to obtain something again on seeing a thing like one that gave pleasure before. ‘Chetana’ for him is a state of the mind lit up by the consciousness of the Self, like iron heated in fire. Sridhara Swami recalls the Brihadaranyaka’s words, ‘desire, resolve, doubt, all this is mind alone’, and says these are properties of the mind, not of the Self.
Ramanuja takes two different positions. For him desire, aversion, pleasure and pain are in truth properties of the self, but since they arise from its connection with the field they are called modifications of the field. He also reads the text differently: ‘chetanadhritih’ is one word, the aggregate that is the support of the conscious one. The Gita Press text follows Shankara and splits it as ‘chetana dhritih’. Madhva briefly calls these ‘modifications’.

For life today
Anger, fear and longing are experiences that come and go, they are not ‘I’. Some forms of psychotherapy used for anxiety and depression teach this very skill: to step back a pace and observe thoughts and feelings.
‘Dhriti’, fortitude, is also in the list. Fortitude too is a capacity that can be built up and that shrinks when we are exhausted. It too needs rest, sleep and the support of those close to us.
