Context and commentary on verse 13.5

This is the list of the field, the twenty-four principles of Sankhya. Shankara unfolds the order towards the cause: the ‘great elements’ here are the subtle elements, their cause is the ego, the sense of ‘I’, its cause the intellect that decides, and its cause the unmanifest. That unmanifest is for him the power of the Lord, the maya spoken of in ‘mama maya duratyaya’ (7.14). The eightfold prakriti of the seventh chapter (7.4) appears here again.

Ramanuja and Sridhara Swami name the senses: the five organs of knowing, ear, skin, eye, tongue and nose, and the five organs of action, speech, hands, feet, and the organs of excretion and generation. ‘Ekam’, the one, is the mind. The objects of the senses are sound, touch, form, taste and smell. According to Ramanuja the principles in the first half are the substances that build the field, and the rest are principles that rest upon it. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today

This list of the ancients is not a textbook of anatomy but a map for reflection on the self. Physiology today counts still more senses: balance, the sense of where our limbs are, and the inner sense of hunger and thirst.

Yet the core of the list is true even today: much of what we call ‘I’ is in fact a set of processes that can be observed. Who it is that observes them is the question of this chapter.
