Context and commentary on verse 13.7
From here, over five verses, comes a list of twenty qualities, and Krishna calls it ‘knowledge’. Shankara’s definitions are precise: ‘amanitva’ is not praising oneself, ‘adambhitva’ not displaying one’s own religious practice, ‘kshanti’ remaining unshaken when others do wrong, ‘shaucha’ outer purity with earth and water and inner purity through cultivating the opposites of attraction and aversion. Madhva introduces this list as the means to knowledge, and gives ‘dambha’ a subtle definition: making a show of greatness while knowing oneself to be small.
Ramanuja’s definitions look towards conduct. ‘Amanitva’ is not slighting one’s elders. ‘Ahimsa’ is causing no pain to others by speech, mind or body. ‘Kshanti’ is keeping one’s mind unspoiled towards others even while they are causing trouble. ‘Arjava’ is speech, mind and action being one and the same in dealings with others. Madhva too explains arjava in this way. Sridhara Swami takes ‘amanitva’ as having no boastfulness about one’s own qualities.

For life today
Ramanuja’s definition of ‘arjava’ is a simple test: are what we say, what we think and what we do the same? What we say to a patient and what we say behind their back should be the same.
‘Acharyopasana’, service of the teacher. Remembering those who taught us and respecting their experience keeps the door of learning open in any profession.
