Context and commentary on verse 13.8

‘Anudarshana’ means seeing again and again, reflecting. Shankara unfolds all five one by one: in birth, the hardship of dwelling in the womb and of coming out, in death its pain, in old age the waning of intellect, strength and vigour and neglect by others, in diseases the torment of headache and the like. Through such reflection, he says, dispassion for the pleasures of body and senses arises and the mind turns inward.

Ramanuja takes ‘anahankara’ as having no sense of ‘I’ in the body, which is not the self, and says it includes having no sense of ‘mine’ in what is not one’s own. His ‘anudarshana’ is reflecting that as long as there is a body, the sorrow of birth, death, old age and disease cannot be escaped. Sridhara Swami gives two senses: reflection on both sorrow and flaw, or reflection on the flaw that is sorrow itself. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today

Doctors see these five every day. This need not lead to despair. Knowing that old age and illness come to everyone gives rise to compassion for the patient and humility about ourselves.

This reflection also has a practical form: talking with the family about the days ahead while we are still in good health. Health insurance, a will, and our wishes about what treatment we would or would not want in a serious illness are not fear but preparation.
