Context and commentary on verse 14.20
Shankara stresses one word: ‘jivann eva’, while still living. Transcending the gunas is not a matter for after death: while in this very body the knower is freed from the sorrow of birth, death and old age and tastes immortality. ‘Dehasamudbhava’ for him means the gunas that are the seed of the body’s birth. Sridhara Swami says all the harm that comes from the gunas ceases and he has fulfilled his purpose.
According to Ramanuja transcending the gunas means seeing the self as other than them, of the single form of knowledge. Then he experiences the immortal self, and this is the ‘my state’ of the previous verse. Madhva explains these two verses together, and his words are on the previous page.

For life today
‘Jara’, old age, is in the list. Old age cannot be stopped, but its sorrow can be lessened: activity, learning, ties with the community, and regular health check-ups.
Shankara’s ‘while still living’ is an invitation to elders: peace need not be postponed to tomorrow, its taste is possible today.
