Context and commentary on verse 14.9
A one-line summary of the three gunas. According to Shankara ‘pramada’ is not doing what is to be done when it comes, and tamas brings this about by veiling the discernment that comes from sattva. Sridhara Swami states the power of sattva in a fine phrase: even when there is cause for sorrow and grief, it turns the embodied one towards happiness.
Ramanuja makes the attachment of tamas still clearer: by veiling the truth of things and producing wrong knowledge, it engages one in action contrary to what should be done. In sattva attachment to happiness predominates, in rajas attachment to action. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
A simple question can be useful at the end of the day: what held me most today? The longing for comfort, work on the run, or the habit of putting things off?
The habit of putting things off is Shankara’s ‘pramada’. A good way to overcome it is to break a large task into small steps and take the first step today.
