Context and commentary on verse 15.1
The fifteenth chapter pictures worldly existence as an upside-down peepal tree. The image comes from the Katha Upanishad’s ‘urdhvamulo ‘vakshakha esho ‘shvatthah sanatanah’. Shankara derives ‘ashvattha’ from ‘na shvah sthata’, that which does not last till tomorrow. Yet it is ‘imperishable’, for the stream of samsara is beginningless. Its root above is the unmanifest Brahman endowed with the power of maya. The Vedas are the leaves: as leaves protect a tree, the Vedas sustain samsara by teaching dharma and adharma and their fruits.
For Ramanuja the ‘root above’ is the four-faced Brahma who dwells above the seven worlds, and from there the branches descend, generation by generation, down to humans. Madhva’s sense is different: ‘urdhva’ means Vishnu, highest of all, as in the Taittiriya’s ‘urdhvapavitrah’. The branches are beings. It is ‘ashvattha’ because it does not stay the same way tomorrow, yet its flow does not perish. Sridhara Swami states the purpose of the chapter: without dispassion there is no knowledge, so this chapter teaches knowledge joined with dispassion.

For life today
The peepal is a familiar tree on the platforms of our villages. The Gita asks us to imagine it upside down: the root of our life is not in the ground we see but above.
‘Yas tam veda sa vedavit.’ The aim of learning is not the number of pages but understanding the structure of life. In many homes there is also the custom of reciting this chapter before meals.
