ಆಶಾಪಾಶಶತೈರ್ಬದ್ಧಾಃ ಕಾಮಕ್ರೋಧಪರಾಯಣಾಃ।
ಈಹಂತೇ ಕಾಮಭೋಗಾರ್ಥಮನ್ಯಾಯೇನಾರ್ಥಸಂಚಯಾನ್ ॥ 12 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
आशापाशशतैर्बद्धाः कामक्रोधपरायणाः।
ईहन्ते कामभोगार्थमन्यायेनार्थसञ्चयान् ॥ 12 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಆಶಾಪಾಶಶತೈಃ ಬದ್ಧಾಃ (आशापाशशतैः बद्धाः, āśāpāśaśataiḥ baddhāḥ) = ನೂರಾರು ಆಸೆಯ ಹಗ್ಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕಿದವರು (bound by hundreds of ropes of hope)
- ಕಾಮಕ್ರೋಧಪರಾಯಣಾಃ (कामक्रोधपरायणाः, kāmakrodhaparāyaṇāḥ) = ಕಾಮ ಕ್ರೋಧಗಳಿಗೇ ಶರಣಾದವರು (given over to lust and anger)
- ಕಾಮಭೋಗಾರ್ಥಮ್ (कामभोगार्थम्, kāmabhogārtham) = ಕಾಮಭೋಗಕ್ಕಾಗಿ (for the sake of sensual enjoyment)
- ಅನ್ಯಾಯೇನ ಅರ್ಥಸಂಚಯಾನ್ ಈಹಂತೇ (अन्यायेन अर्थसञ्चयान् ईहन्ते, anyāyena arthasañcayān īhante) = ಅನ್ಯಾಯದಿಂದ ಹಣ ಕೂಡಿಡಲು ಹವಣಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ (they strive to hoard wealth by unjust means)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ನೂರಾರು ಆಸೆಯ ಹಗ್ಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕಿ, ಕಾಮ ಕ್ರೋಧಗಳಿಗೇ ಶರಣಾಗಿ, ಕಾಮಭೋಗಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅನ್ಯಾಯದಿಂದ ಹಣ ಕೂಡಿಡಲು ಹವಣಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Bound by hundreds of ropes of hope, given over to lust and anger, they strive to hoard wealth by unjust means for the sake of sensual enjoyment.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 16.12ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 16.12
‘ಆಶಾಪಾಶ’, ಆಸೆಯ ಹಗ್ಗ, ಸುಂದರ ಚಿತ್ರ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಆಸೆಗಳೇ ಹಗ್ಗಗಳು, ಅಂಥ ನೂರಾರು ಹಗ್ಗಗಳಿಂದ ಕಟ್ಟಿಹಾಕಿದ ಅವರನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲ ದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳಿಗೆ ಎಳೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವರ ಹಣದ ಗಳಿಕೆ ಧರ್ಮಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಭೋಗಕ್ಕಾಗಿ, ಅದೂ ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರ ಸ್ವತ್ತನ್ನು ಕಿತ್ತುಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂಥ ಅನ್ಯಾಯದಿಂದ.
‘Ashapasha’, the rope of hope, is a lovely image. According to Shankara hopes are the ropes, and bound by hundreds of such ropes they are pulled in every direction. Their gathering of wealth is not for dharma but for enjoyment, and that too by injustice such as seizing another’s property.
ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಅನ್ಯಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕಳ್ಳತನದ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಹಗ್ಗಗಳು ಅವರನ್ನು ‘ಅತ್ತಿತ್ತ ಎಳೆಯುತ್ತವೆ’ ಎಂದು ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನೇ ಮುಂದುವರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ‘ಕಾಮಕ್ರೋಧಪರಾಯಣ’ರನ್ನು ಕಾಮ ಕ್ರೋಧಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಏಕನಿಷ್ಠರಾದವರು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.
Sridhara Swami gives theft as an example of injustice, and continues Shankara’s picture of the ropes pulling them ‘this way and that’. Ramanuja calls ‘kamakrodhaparayana’ those singly devoted to lust and anger. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಸುಲಭ ಸಾಲದ ಆ್ಯಪ್ಗಳು, ಬೇಗ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತರಾಗುವ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳು ಇಂದಿನ ‘ಆಸೆಯ ಹಗ್ಗಗಳು’. ಅವು ಅನೇಕ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳನ್ನು ಸಾಲದ ಸುಳಿಗೆ ಎಳೆದಿವೆ.
Easy-loan apps and get-rich-quick schemes are today’s ‘ropes of hope’. They have pulled many families into a whirlpool of debt.
ಸಾಲದ ಒತ್ತಡ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಕುಗ್ಗಿಸಿದರೆ ಒಬ್ಬರೇ ಹೊರಬೇಡಿ. ಕುಟುಂಬ, ಬ್ಯಾಂಕಿನ ಅಧಿಕೃತ ಸಲಹೆ, ಆಪ್ತಸಮಾಲೋಚನೆ ದಾರಿ ತೋರಬಹುದು.
