Context and commentary on verse 16.2
The acharyas give each word an exact sense. For Shankara ‘truth’ is speech that states things as they are, neither unpleasant nor false. ‘Akrodha’ is calming the anger that arises when others abuse or strike us. ‘Apaishuna’ is not exposing another’s faults before others. For Ramanuja ‘truth’ is speech that matches what was seen and is good for beings, and ‘compassion’ is being unable to bear the suffering of others.
Madhva calls ‘paishuna’ reporting to a king or the like the faults that bring trouble to another, and explains ‘laulya’ as attachment and ‘achapala’ as steadiness, on the basis of the lexicons. Sridhara Swami calls ‘tyaga’ generosity, and ‘akrodha’ the absence of agitation in the mind even when struck. Shankara takes ‘tyaga’ as renunciation, because giving was already named in the previous verse.

For life today
‘Speech that is true and beneficial’ is a daily lesson for doctors. Telling even bad news without falsehood, but with kindness and in keeping with the listener’s readiness, is an art.
‘Apaishuna’, not carrying tales. Workplace gossip quickly spoils a team’s trust. A good test is whether we would say it if the person we are talking about were present.
